  • Reading food labels correctly?

    Hello,
I know food labels has a total carb count, but underneath may be several sub-groups such as Dietary Fiber, Sugar, Sugar Alcohols.

What I have been doing to get my "net carbs" count is taking the total carb count and subtracting all the "sub-groups" (dietary fiber, sugar, and sugar alcohols) to get my net carb count.

    Am I doing this correctly?

Now, I thought I saw a post where I'm only supposed to minus the amount of dietary fiber only??

    Hi!

You're supposed to only be subtracting the fibre from the total carbs to give you net carbs

You should subtract sugar alcohols as well as fiber but not sugar (sugar is the carb so to speak).
Try to not eat sugar alcohols though. Though some people may get away with it for some it will cause a sugar spike.

I only subtract fiber. While I think I can eat sugar alcohols without a huge problem, I don't trust it.

You're on induction, so you shouldn't be eating anything that has sugar alcohols or sugar listed on the nutrition information or ingredients.

I am not sure but I think some products list sugar in the label even though it is "natural" sugar like those in veggies or dairy. Certainly not eat anything where sugar is listed under ingredients - that means sugar was added to the product.
