  • My reasons for taking my health seriously

Sometimes ... when I just feel like cheating on the diet ... or maybe giving up ... or in that just dont care mood. I look at my children and realize that hey ... I need to be around and healthy to take care of them and participate in and witness as much of their life as I can. This definitely overpowers a desire to cheat.

What are your reasons to want to be healthier?

Mine are very similar to yours.. my kids by far but I also got tired of the pain in my knees and back. Also, I got tired of having chest pains, tired of having my insulin all screwy which in turn made me fatigued etc.

Great question, Tom. I used to want to be healthier for my children, but now they are teen-agers and they are annoying. (jk)

I want to be healthier, but mostly I want to be sexier! I have always wanted to wear jeans with high heels...
        149.8/no weigh/ 119

        1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
        rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
        rung 4 - berries, melon
        rung 5 - wine -
        rung 6 - beans, hummus
        rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
        Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
        (on to pre-maintenance)

Re: My reasons for taking my health seriously

Because I am 52 years old (almost 53). I come from a long line of overweight people diagnosed with such afflictions as congestive heart failure, cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity.

I refuse to turn out the same way.

Before Atkins (circa 2001, I was overweight, sedentary, had chronic knee pain, hip pain and back pain. I never exercised (hey, who's got time for *that*?) I ate crap, and correspondingly felt like crap. I suffered from a host of maladies including:

irritable bowel syndrome, migraine headaches, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, no energy (gad, IMAGINE THAT)....

I told DH that I was certain I would need total KNEE REPLACEMENT before I was 60.

I picked up DANDR on a whim on January 18, 2002. I read the book in 2 days and thought "this man is either a genius or a lunatic". So I decided to test him ... do atkins for 2 weeks .. prove him wrong .. go back to eating "normal" ...)

          Well, fast forward to today.

I am now nearly 53 years old, lost 40+ pounds on Atkins in 2002. Took up running at age 48 in 2003 .. have logged over 7,000 running miles since then, including 2 26.2 mile marathons and a boatload of other races ... those same knees? you know, the ones that I thought would need replacing? Well, guess what .. I have NO PAIN in those knees now ... even after all those miles .. proof positive that the human body does NOT deterioriate from over use .. rather the LACK of it ...

My initial reason for starting Atkins was to lose weight .. but what's truly impressive is what Atkins has caused me to GAIN ...

my youth; my vitality; my energy; my total enjoyment of life again, in the absence of all my previous afflictions.

Its a shame that Dr. Atkins has gone on now ... before I could personally thank him for all he and his wonderful plan have done for me .. I simply would bow to the man who gave me my life back.

          Betty

6.5 years on Atkins; successfully maintaining a 40+ pound weight loss; bonafide marathon runner at age 52.5 ... feeling better than ever.

Re: My reasons for taking my health seriously

Seeing my medical report and getting declined benefits because of being Morbid Obese. Obesity was slowly killing me and my self esteem which was impacting my marriage and my kids. I was embarrassing my oldest son (16), it is nice seeing how proud he is of me.

Re: My reasons for taking my health seriously

I am 46 years old over 100 pounds over weight and my daughter is only 4. I get so scared I will die and leave the poor thing completely alone in the world. #1 reason I want to see her grown up and establised in her own life before I go. Other reasons tired of always being the biggest person in the room, tired of shopping online at the plus size shops because sometimes even the plus size stores don't stock size 28, tired of my hips, knees, ankles, back neck hurting. There are about a 100 more reasons but those are the top ones anyway.
