  • Digital v Mechanical

I got a set of digital scales just after i started the Atkin's again, thing is, the reading's can tend to be a bit on the variable side.
The other day, i was down to 345 from 350, and i was absolutely delighted, i weighed myself today and it read 346, i read it half an hour later and it read 349. On other day's it has had difficulty in making it's mind up.
Does anybody else have this problem.
Or should i just get a set of mechanical scales and throw the digi's off the end of the harbour.

    Re: Digital v Mechanical

I personally think coming from a science aspect that a digital balance is a far better tool to measure mass than a mechanical balance.

I've found that my scale at home tends to be a little finicky, but what I end up doing is weighing myself about 3 times directly in a row to make sure the weight being displayed is reproducable.

Your weight can be thrown off by up to a few pounds in any given day depending on what you have ingested, be it food or water. I know when I weigh myself in the morning after working out I subtract 0.5 pounds from my shown weight to accomidate the 8 oz of water I drank (A pint's (16oz) a pound a world around as I like to remember it)

    Hang in there!

      Thank's gbidruglord.
I thought the same about the digital scales before i bought them, especially in this day and age.
I'm still in ketosis anyway, so something must be happening.

        Re: Digital v Mechanical

I've found regardless whether I weigh myself on a digital or mechanical scale, the weight can vary up to 5lbs in either direction which can be REALLY discouraging if you are losing weight, but the scale isn't correct. I've started using a measuring tape and measuring myself once a week. The scale hasn't shown a budge in the last week and a half, but my measurements show a 1/2 inch loss on my waist and 1 inch on my thighs, so I must be doing something right.

I have a digital scale and weigh myself three times consecutively and take the average of the three. Usually two out of the three times is the same weight.

            Re: Digital v Mechanical

I have the same issue with my scale. One day I got on it three times in a row and it said 169, 174 and 184.5... !!! What the heck!
So, usually I tap it, wait for it to zero out and then hop on. I will try it a few times to make sure the read is consistent. I'm not sure what causes the digital scale to misread, it might just be a glitch of some kind....

              Thank's for the replies folk's.
It's reassuring to know that it's not only my scales that seem to have a mind of there own!
I have noticed a difference in some of my clothes though, and i feel a lot better, so i must be heading in the right direction.
