everyone here recommends to follow the 2002 edition, I have the old 1997 edition- what changes to the diet have been made- do I really need to go out and buy the newer one?

It is recommended and it the common thread on the forums. That way we are all on the same page, no pun intended.

You can follow it if you want, but just remember you might have dificulty getting a good answer about the foods list and counting the carbs, etc. because there aren't many people here who have that book.

I have the old book too, 1999 that has a few updates from when it was originally printed in 1992. I read the old book for general info and i look on here for the info on the OWL rungs because he doesnt have them in the old book. I dont think you have to buy the 2002 edition (I am planning on buying it) but it probably is updated with some more useful info.

Re: can I follow the 1997 book

I lost my weight using the 1999 edition, but I now have the 2002 edition and it explains OWL and pre-maintenance much better. Induction is not much different, but the later phases are covered much better.

I do like having the older books, because the newer ones leave out some important information. I now have all the books from 1992 up. If your library has Friends of the Library book sales, you can usually get them for less than a buck.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Check out your used bookstore/Sally Ann. I found 3 copies of the 2002 DANDR for 99 cents each.

I buy them from charity shops (usually 3 for a pound or even 50p) so I can hand them to anyone interested in my WOE. So if you have any thrift shops or similar nearby they might have a copy.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
