  • Did I screw up unknowingliy?

My name is Rusty, and this is my second time on Atkins. I've been on the diet now 4 days, but today I had some turkey lunch meat that my son would not eat. I had about half a piece and looked at the sugar. There was a gram of sugar in it. Did I just screw up my diet? I had planned on buying my strips to test my ketones, but now I'm too afraid I blew it and have to start those 4 days over again. Also, here is a run down of my meals everyday:

Breakfast: 2 eggs and 2 pieces of turkey bacon/water

Lunch: Turkey patty with 2 pieces of bacon and cheese/ one chicken breast

Snack: 3 pieces of rolled up ham

Supper: 1 chicken breast/ 1 can of tuna(mayo and dill relish)

Is this ok. I drink 1 gallon of water a day and chew only sugar free gum to rid that nasty taste.

DID I BLOW MY DIET TODAY UNKNOWINGLY??????

Rusty, relax, that one piece of turkey is not going to wreck you, promise.

You will lose weight on the menu you posted, for sure.

You might not feel the best, however, and that isn't necessary. You have no vegetables in your day, (I don't count relish.)

You need 3 cups of salad type veggies, leafy greens, radishes, etc. or two cups salad type veggies and one cup cooked EVERY DAY in induction.

Three cups of vegetables minimum. Choose from the 'induction list' in the book. Also in this forum

Atkins Low Carb Dieting - FAQ's - Atkins Diet

you can find the induction list, and the induction rules.

Not eating your veggie carbs will impact your feelings of 'well being.' You can expect a few days of detox where you feel cruddy, after that you should feel terrific, rush of energy, but you won't feel your best if you don't eat your veggies.

It takes a while to learn all the 'ins and outs' but it is so worth it!

Also, I go more by the actual ingredient list. Some foods have natural sugar so as long as it's not in the ingredients it should be ok.

From the diet you posted, I would agree that you are not getting your veggies in, as mom2many mentioned you need to get in your 3 cups every day. Also, watch the ingredients in turkey bacon, normally it has fillers...as well as the dill relish, if it's the regular jar condiment relish it most likely will have sugar in it too (quite a bit).

Thanks for the advice on the veggies and meal plan. So, I need to add some veggies into the mix. Could someone explain "fillers" a little bit more to me. Also, if the nutrient label says no sugar, but the ingredient label does say suger, should I be worried about that food item. Does it just mean an insignificant amount of sugar is in it? Thanks for the help. I'm still learning!

Re: Did I screw up unknowingliy?

for 'fillers' normally when a food is altered to make it taste like another food (in the case of turkey 'bacon'), or to make it low/no fat, they have to add fillers in order to get the consistency to mimic the full fat version of that food. 0 fat dairy such as yogurt, sour cream etc are usually a perfect example of this. other foods that usually contain fillers include sausage, burgers, hotdogs and many other 'formed' meats....

On the Butterball site, their turkey bacon lists the following as it's ingredients:

turkey, mechanically separated turkey, turkey skin, salt, water, sugar, potato starch, sodium phosphate, nat. and art. flavour, sodium ascorbate, smoke flavour, sodium nitrite, smoke.
It's a good idea to look at the ingredients list on the foods you buy as well as the nutritional values.

Regarding 'naturally' occurring sugars, yes many foods, including veggies and dairy have naturally occurring sugars that can show up on the nutritional list. However it's still a good idea to read the ingredients list, and not just look for sugar but also starches in the list.

Re: Did I screw up unknowingliy?

Ok thanks for the advice again. I guess I need to leave out the turkey bacon. Would regular bacon be ok or breakfast sausage? I like the fact of having meat with my eggs.
