  • Calcium?

I was just reading about what supplements to take and someone wrote on there that taking their calcium actually helps them sleep or makes them sleepy. I just bought some calcium today and I took it, and this evening I am so sleepy and tired, could it be from the calcium?? Never heard of such but just curious does it really relax u in some way? And my big question is which BRAND of multi vitamins are the best to take with this WOE? And another stupid ? is when u buy potassium does it say it on the bottle or does it go by another name because I couldn't find it today at the store? Thanks for all the help! Hope I don't sound too stupid!!

    Re: Calcium?

My vitamins have 16% of the RDA of calcium and it doesn't make me sleepy. In fact I have to be very tired to be sleepy at all on Atkins.

There isn't anything such as 'the best brand'. For example I take Multi Complete from Nature Made. But there are a lot of alternatives on the market, I really don't think the brand matters so much. You might want to read biogeek's post on nutritional supplements:
I know it's a silly question, and everyone at work is making fun of me for question that out loud. Does it? It's so sweet!

Why would you take potassium?? You should get enough potassium from food.

      Re: Calcium?

Below are the recommendations for daily intake of calcium
      0-6 months 210 milligrams/day
      6-12 months 270 milligrams/day
      1-3 years 500 milligrams/day
      4-8 years 800 -1,200 milligrams/day
      9-18 years 1,300 milligrams/day
      Adults 19-50 1,000 milligrams/day
      Adults 51+ years 1,200 - 1,500 milligrams/day
Pregnant and nursing women 1,200 milligrams

As for the multi, I recommend Centrum silver (or generic). The reason is that the silver formulation does not contain iron. On this WOE we should normally hit iron intake just from our foods. As for the potassium, the bottle should at least say potassium on it (it might have gluconate or chloride as well).

          Re: Calcium?

I do sleep better when i take my calcium. I always take it right before bed so it absorbs better (iron and calcium cancel eachother out). I take Citracal +D. Yes Potassium is called Potassium as a supplement.
