  • Food Questions, Please help

Okay, so my Ketostix have me in the trace area...and I'm on day 4 now. Someone mentioned that I could be sneaking in sugar somewhere...so I went on a hunt.

I pulled out my Fat Free Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing and the carb count per 2 Tbsp is 1 gram. However, in the ingredients the 7th ingredient listed is Cane Syrup....soooo? Could this be it?

I've also used Reduced Fat mozzarella string cheese as a snack. In this it is also one carb per stick.

    I've had bacon too....

Ideas or comments on what I could be doing wrong? Also, anyone have any tips on working out that doesn't include bending or putting much pressure on my right knee?

Thank you so much for your time ~

Don't eat 'fat free' anything! This is a high fat diet. We aim for 65 percent of our calories from fat in the first phases. Balsamic vinegar is ruled out on page 127 because of the sugar. Eat full fat cheeses, bacon is fine, find the least amount of sugar bacon you can find, don't skimp on butter. The ratio of high fat to low carbs is what puts us in ketosis, not just 'low carb!'

Anyway you can swim? Great exercise, easy on joints!

I will second Mom to many. You need to have a high fat to carb ratio to be deep in ketosis, though for some it never happens. And just in case you have not been told yet, you should read the 2002 version of Dr. Atkins book. He gives very specific directions for induction and it is a very informative and inspiring read!
        Good luck!

Thank you so very much for your answers and support. I will do make sure to start using full fat products. This will be an odd change for me, considering I haven't used full fat products in ages, lol! I will need to get the 2002 Atkins book. The one I read was a very old copy, the book was falling apart, so I'll do that also.

Swimming is a great idea! Now I just have to find a pool, hehe. Thank you so much for your help and support!

I wise person on this board explained the ketostix using the analogy of pregnancy. Either you're pregnant or not. You can't just be a little bit pregnant. Either you're in ketosis or you're not. Showing a trace amount or a large amount doesn't matter. As long as some amount shows up you're in ketosis.

Little known fact.. if you can get in the pool and just tread water, you will burn the same calories you would burn if you were doing the breast stroke. In 30 minutes of treading water, you will burn 480 calories. And I can tread water for 30 minutes straight, but I am not a trained swimmer, and really wouldn't swim 30 minutes straight. At our pool, there are little flotation thingies you can put on your ankles so that you have to fight to keep your feet under water, adds resistance. Or grab some of the foam 'water weights' if they have them for water aerobics, and wave them around under water to add resistance too.

I hope you do find yourself a pool!

You two are brilliant! You litterally made me laugh out loud about the 'you're pregnant or not' deal. Hehe

I did not know that treading water was that good! That is really exciting. I will join a gym if I have to....of course after my surgery is over and my doctor gives me the all clear.

Thank you to everyone for you amazing advice! Ya'll Rock!

Hey Melissa! Does Las Vegas have a nautatorium? There are a couple here available for use and it costs me 2 bux whenever I want to go swim. Much better than spending on a gym membership.

I'm not too sure what Vegas has for public swimming pools. I know I have a YMCA not too far from me. I will find out today what is close to me. I'm not suppose to drive because my knee could pop out of socket so easily, so what ever I find has to be close so I can get my husband to drive me there and pick me up. =) I'll look into that though, thanks for your support and advice Tammy! You rock!

The YMCA has financial assistance. I am not sure what you financial situation is, but I know I couldn't afford a membership there or anywhere else. I filled out the financial assistance form (1 page), included a copy of my 2007 tax return and three days later a lady called to tell me my family of 4 was approved for membership with a monthly fee of only $15. It is worth taking the 2 minutes it takes to fill out the form.
