My hubby bought some Atkins brand shakes at the store. They have like one carb. I wasn't exactly sure if it was a frakenfood because it was put out by Atkins. I have stayed away just in case, but it would make for a fast breakfast in the mornings. Anyone use these? Or would you advise staying away?

Re: Frankenfood Question
Just because it wears the Atkins name doesn't make it any less a Frankenfood. The good doctor didn't approve of them, either, when he was alive. He stated that they should only be used in an emergency.
That said, some people can use them but even more can't. They will never take the place of real food.
It is easy to prepare a lot of healthy foods in advance and have them ready when you are pressed for time. Most low carb foods freeze really well and can be pulled out and nuked in just a couple of minutes. Salmon or tuna muffins and crustless quiche are two of my favorites to make up a big batch and freeze in individual servings for later.

Re: Frankenfood Question
I dont know if the shakes were around or have changed from when he was alive but i know the bars have. The bars he approved of were lacking in taste and sweetness. The all tasted similar and were very bland. When they made the new ones they went nuts on the sugar alcohols. I kinda miss the old bars because atleast i knew i could eat them once in awhile and still lose.25/F

Re: Frankenfood Question
I have had the strawberry shakes ( 2 of them so far ). I haven't seen any real problems. I have bought the bars too but haven't had any yet. So afraid of the awful "stall"!
Most on here will say stay away. Especially during induction. I think it's about like most of the stages of Atkins. You will have to see if it adversly affects you.
Good luck,~~~Donna~~~

Re: Frankenfood Question
Thanks for the quick responses. I am pretty sensitive to sugar alchols and stuff so I think I will just keep away. I forgot about making salmon muffins. I used to eat them a lot. Thanks again!HW-350

Re: Frankenfood Question
the new shakes are gritty.. they have a grainy quality like drinking something thats not quite desolved.. i didnt like them.. then after being here for a while and seeing all the comments about frankenfoods and the atkins company going off the deep end.. i said i would stay away.... but i have succomed to the bars.. and i tend to stall every time i have the bars i go up and down the same 2 or 3 pounds in that week .. for me i just need to stay completely away from the atkins brand....

Re: Frankenfood Question
I don't like them but I keep a couple in the fridge for emergency lunches when I come in starving and haven't planned well or if I am going in the car and won't have a chance to stop and eat.(Here in China, there are very few restaurants that one can pop into for a low carb meal.) They don't usually trigger me, in fact they taste kind of gross so I usually don't want anything for awhile afterward. I would definitely avoid them until the dairy rung since they are mostly whey powder and who knows what else. But as an emergency filler for a meal, they do serve a purpose.

Re: Frankenfood Question
Highly processed ingredients made to resemble healthy food, but is far from it. Processed "health bars", shakes and energy drinks are at the top of the list. The farther you get away from whole foods, the more it is a Frankenfood.Originally posted by Swordfish View PostCould somebody tell me what a 'Frankenfood' is.

Re: Frankenfood Question
Initially I found I was VERY sensitive to the sugar alcohols like sorbitol and manitol. So for 5 months I stayed away. I had bought some atkins bars for emergencies and just last week I dug into a couple of them. I did not have a reaction at all. I actually found them to be kind of pleasant. I opened the bar and cut it into small cubes. I was working 12 hour shifts and ate them over the course of my day... WHICH was excruciatiingly long. I had my meals but needed something in between. THEY worked amazingly. that being said I am not sure I would EVER substitute a regular meal for the ATKINS prepared food. It just does not seem right. I am so committed to this way of life that my thinking has changed to the point that I am being prepared at least 6 days in advance with what I am eating... and always making sure I have lots of healthy options. By doing this I am preparing myself for success and not setting myself up for failure... as I see so often in signatures here... FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!
