  • No calorie counting? where does the xtra fat go

    So here is my question

    Question.....I am curious

    Fact -

Atkins is not that concerned with calorie intake
    Fact -

During induction there is not much focus on the amount of calories that one should eat.....There is no calorie counting

    Question -

You are 10 kilos overweight, eating mostly fat and in ketosis, meaning that the body is burning fat....If the body is burning the fat that you are consuming how comes it is that you loose weight?

ie - say you eat 100 fat and you are expending energy that uses 100 fat - how come you still loose the initial stored fat...

Or infact would you not loose weight at at all if the intake equals the outflow of energy...ie you did no excercise

Dr. Atkins said you didn't have to count calories because one of the side effects of ketosis/lipolysis is appetite suppression. So if you follow your appetite, then you will eat only the amount of calories your body needs.

    Question -

Because whenever your body breaksdown any macronutrient, it produces energy, water and carbon dioxide. PLUS it takes energy (calories) to do that breaking down.

ie - say you eat 100 fat and you are expending energy that uses 100 fat - how come you still loose the initial stored fat...
You have to remember that your body requires a minimum amount of calories/energy just to do the normal functions of life---breathing, heart beating, nerve impulses sent from your brain to different parts of your body and back again, etc. These actions all require energy to do. That energy requirement is called the Basal Metabolic Rate. It's the minimum amount of energy you need to use in order to just stay alive. Once you do anything above that, you need to use more energy to support that.

But if you walk up a flight of stairs, your body will need more energy. Now when you are in ketosis, your body is using energy to break down body fat. So picture this:

You need x amount of energy just to live. You need x amount of energy to walk up a flight of stairs. And at the same time, you're in ketosis and your body is using up energy to break down your fat.

In other words, your body is always in action and is always requiring energy. When you are in ketosis/lipolysis, your body is requiring energy to break down that fat, so you are losing calories to that fat breakdown in addition to using calories to stay alive or walking up stairs or even sitting upright in a chair.

Or infact would you not loose weight at at all if the intake equals the outflow of energy...ie you did no excercise
Dr. Atkins does say that you don't have to count calories on his diet, but they do matter because if you eat more calories than you use, you won't lose weight.
