Re: How much protein do we need, any way?

No offense to anyone, but none of these answers seem correct.

I'm going to guess that 100 grams of protein a day is adequate for someone who wants to weight 160 pounds (or even 200 pounds) and isn't doing heavy weight training. My carb target is still 20 grams a day. So that's 400 calories from protein. That would be 30% of 1300 calorie diet, which sounds reasonable.

I've been eating a lot less protein than that, so I'm going to make an effort to get more. I don't have much appetite at all so it's too easy to eat very little. I need to eat more, especially to lose weight. What a crazy, wonderful way of eating when you have to eat more to weigh less.

OK, Chickilady, thanks for that link.
The Zone guy says between 60 - 72 grams of protein a day, depending on my activity level.
I guess if I really start exercising a lot I will need to eat more.

No offense taken here. I was just chiming in on the forum. I am getting an average of just under 100 g of protein a day. But some days I really get up there! But since I'm working out like a mad hatter I guess I'm okay!

Protein = muscle growth. Muscle growth = burned calories. Do you know how many calories your body burns per hour to just feed one lb of muscle. Add 5 muscle pounds to your body and you are a fat burning machine for sitting there...

Well, mastermind has got me curious... I've been hearing that too much protein (which seems to be more than a gram per pound) will convert to glucose.

Do your sources tell you that this doesn't happen? and does the extra protein build muscle without exercise, or does it only apply if you are working out?

No exercise, no muscle growth, no matter how much protein you eat. Exercise, of course, can be anything that's not sitting in front of the TV with a remote
