  • Induction Coffee Question

Hi all, this is my second day on the Induction phase. Could you please tell me if having three coffees per day, with one tablespoon of cream in each one, is acceptable? I just don't think I cut my caffeine intake.

    Thanks

Caffeine boosts insulin production. Insulin is a fat storing hormone.

Not to make light of the other commentors, but I have not cut all of my caffeine intake and I have still lost 20+ pounds in one month. I drink 3-4 cups of hot black tea /day. Granted, tea has less caffeine than coffee. Have you tried to dilute your coffee? use 1/2 grounds cafefeinated and 1/2 grounds decaf. that way you still get the caffeine but way less. as you get used to the added decaf you can start increasing the amount of decaf and lessening the amount of regular. Before atkins I drank 10-12 cups (american size cups) of tea /day. 3-4 cups per day is all i could wean myself down to.

You will obviously still lose weight, but it will inhibit how much weight you lose...where you lose 20 you can lose 25 for example...it's best to try and eliminate all caffeine for optimal results.

Best to not drink it - but if you have to - try decaffinated. Instead of 3 cups a day, start weaning yourself, go down to 2 cups for a few days, then down to 1, then try to go off it for awhile and you will see the difference in how you feel.

Different people react differently to caffeine. Some people metabolize it faster than other people, which is why all the studies you've read on caffeine have mixed results. Saying "I haven't cut caffeine and I still lost weight" is meaningless as far as other people are concerned. The only way to know for sure is to establish a baseline. That's done through induction.

In one of Dr. Atkins earlier books (I forget which one), he shows his diet prescription sheet which he gives his patients. It reads like like the induction allowable food list that we're all familiar with except that there are lots of blanks to fill which look something like this...

                Cheeze __oz. a day
                Vegetables __cups a day
                Coffee is [allowed|not allowed]

For those lucky enough to consult with Dr. Atkins, they received an induction regimen customized by Dr. Atkins himself. Dr. Atkins could monitor his patients' progress and tweak the diet further to each patient's individual needs.

Dr. Atkins realized that not everyone had access to his clinic, so he created the Atkins Diet that people could follow without having to go to his clinic. Following the diet, people can establish their baseline and isolate the various causes of weight-gain (Induction), customize the diet to their own needs (OWL), learn to keep their weight off (Pre-maintenance), and establish their way of life (Maintenance).

Before you consider tweaking Induction, it would be wise to assume that Dr. Atkins had considered it first.

                  Re: Induction Coffee Question

Coffee stalls me. It is definitely a situation where you have to do what your own body says, and not what worked for the next guy. Some people can drink it. Some can't.

                      Re: Induction Coffee Question

EXACTLY....cut it out for two weeks and follow induction strictly to the tee. after two weeks you will probably be over your caffeine addiction anyhow. do great herbal teas and decaf coffees...it is truly best.

Just want to add - when somebody says coffee they do not always mean the caffeinated kind.
