  • Just a little gripe

    or maybe three

I am so excited by losing 8 pounds that I told one of my office friends and she gave me these dreaded words of advice - "Yea Atkins good for losing weight but just watch your cholesterol." She also told me about her friend who thinks she developed gout from Atkins, etc, etc.

In my opinion it just wasn't worth going into that by living Atkins you actually avoid all of the heebies and the jeebies and that possibly her friend had gout all along and that she didn't read the book and follow because Dr. Atkins always warns of conditions that maybe aggravated by living this lifestyle, or ....

Anyway, thanks for letting me gripe

    Re: Just a little gripe

If there were ever intense training for a degree in Quit-Caring, it's Atkins. Focus on your own approval. There is nothing more emancipating in life, in my opinion, and the sign of a true independent-thinking, confident leader. Has anyone you've ever admired in life represented anything less?

When it comes to dealing with falsehood-based arguments like the ones posed by your co-workers, quickly correct them and move on. Clarifying their own judgments based on misinformation is above and beyond your call of duty as it is, and good of you to take the time to do so.

In the meantime, keep your nose to the grindstone and do what you have to do with a non-negotiable mindset. You'll get there and will be all the happier and more confident for it.

Before long, they'll be asking you for advice. Watch!

hi sheila....GREAT ANSWER!!!! i read posts like this all the time from people here who get negative "talk" from others that that talk to about atkins.

FOCUS ON YOUR OWN APPROVAL....i think i will type this in BOLD letters and tape it in my medicine cabinet, over my computer, on the fridge.

it is much nicer than my own thought of...."i don't care WHAT you think...i know what i know and that is just fine with me."....your thoughts are far more diplomatic.

not to worry luckie duckie...join the legions of us who have heard it all from the naysayers.....when you are melting away, when you have a doctor's report that shows your cholesterol dropped over 20 points and your body fat dropped from 39%to 26%......or other such successes....just smile and say "thank you."

            Re: Just a little gripe

I think this is something every single one of us has dealt with and boy oh boy it sure gets annoying! I have to admit that I had incorrect thoughts about Atkins before starting too. I decided to research the program and most importantly the science behind it. All my research changed my mind and I started Atkins and have lost 50 since June. I also stabilized my blood sugar and no longer have high blood pressure. Sounds pretty healthy to me I am now very prepared for those negative comments from uninformed but well-intentioned people. I agree with correcting the misinformation and moving on. The proof is in the pudding and when everyone starts seeing how fabulous and healthy you look, they will be green with envy

              Re: Just a little gripe

While there is little to the myth that Atkins is bad for your cholesterol, it can be true that Atkins can aggravate gout. I seem to have developed gout, which I never had before. I was eating liver once a day for several days before it started, which I now find is a 'high -purine' food and I am going to skip for now. But for more than a week, a few times a day my joint behind my big left toe burns and sort of throbs. It is never for more than a few minutes, and just a few times a day. I don't feel like Atkins caused it, per se, and I can focus my diet more on the low purine foods, eggs, tofu, berries. I am also going to get more vitamin C in my regimen. I have been having a harder time remembering my supps lately.

Now, there have been so many health improvements on Atkins.. the pain/numbness I was getting in my legs has gone away, skins great, nails are wonderful, I can live with the gout. Getting rid of the excess weight will only help, and in maintenance I can really focus on getting the right foods so that this does not progress.

And this is the great thing about Atkins - We get to choose and not someone telling up that for breakfast you have 2 boiled eggs and a cup of coffee, and then you have... but my office friend is a passionate person and at the time she was expounding, there's no interrupting her when she's like this so I usually just let her talk herself out. We'll get back around to this conversation, however, in the meantime I'm gonna' live Atkins. As I said this was just a little gripe or three

By the way, have all of you notice that your skin sort of changes? My skin is so soft now. I was driving the other day and I was trying to remember when my skin was this soft. I hate lotion so I'm really ashy but now I'm a sort soft ashy I'm really looking forward to having clear skin again and I've been sleeping like a rock. Normally, I have insomnia but now I sleep like normal people. AND I get up and don't feel sleepy in the mornings or at work which I was struggling a week ago to stay awake. I have to wait for my work from my project managers and they are not always most timely of people.

So many great changes I've been having in my body even when I feel off the wagon today. I posted in another thread about that but I'm ready to get back into routine tomorrow and even step it up a notch to see if I could get back into ketosis a little earlier than Monday - you know the 48 hour to burn off the pancake and start burning fat thingy.

So good night everyone and thank you for your great advice!

                Love, Duckie

I have to get down to some serious book reading so that I will have the information. Mostly I'll just let people talk themselves out, kinda lookin' like this at them, and then I move on; but you all are right I do need some ready answers for when people question me about what I'm doing. Thanks everybody for this.

GOD I'M LOVING THIS BOARD! The last time I did Atkins it was just me and my doctor, now I got support from all over the world. I AM Blessed!
