  • Doctors...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

I had to go see my Dr today because I fell at the beach and jarred my back which in turn has caused my sciatica to flare up. No real biggie but I needed to get my flexeril refilled so that I can get some sleep at night.

While there he was asking me about how my diabetes is, and I told him that I'd been eating low-carb since Aug 6, my blood sugars haven't gone over 7.9 *once* in that time, and I am down 25 pounds.

    His response?

"Eh...ok. Get your A1C up to date and here's your flexeril scrip."

Geee...the ENTHUSIASM. Well excuse me but I think its freaking awesome that I'm down the weight I am, and that my sugars have stabilized!! Would it have been too much effort to even smile once or act pleased at what I've accomplished in the last 3 months?

You know.. I am sorry that happen. What type of doctor is he? If he was an endo doctor he would have been happier. It sounds like he does not deal with diabetic people enough. Maybe you need a doctor that is more into your health and well being.

But on the other hand.. WAY to go. You have done a fantastic job.

I am diabetic as well and I am searching for a new doctor since I had my daughter. The office I went to while pregnant was the best care for my diabetes I have ever had. Too bad they only see OB patients.

He's just a GP. The thing is when I saw him in July, he told me that he wanted me to start walking and eat healthier and lose 100 lbs. Well I'm 1/4 there, I kind of expected he'd at least be pleased.

Congrats on losing 25 pounds! That took a lot of hard work and determination.

Get another doctor. Seriously. I have one the exact same way. I detest going to him, and I'm searching for a new one. Don't we all want a doctor who is enthusiastic and caring, and shows some concern? They're out there, you just have to find them.

Great going on your weight loss. I hope your dr becomes more encouraging. I know where I live it is almost impossible to get a new dr because of the shortage of dr.s

Well, on the bright side, he didn't give you a "atkin's isn't healthy" talk.
You have several choices 1) tell him how you're feeling about his response 2) find a new doctor 3) accept that he's doing his job and bedside manners will never be his specialty.
                meanwhile.... good job!!!

                    Re: Doctors...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

sounds like my doctor. My choleseterol was down 25 points or so and all he told me was that atkins was dangerous and that i should go back on the lowfat high carb diet he put me on a year ago. not a word of encouragement for the drop in cholesterol. I did that diet with a vengenace and was really strict with portions and I ended up gaining 25 pounds. So far I have lost that 25 pounds and then some.

If my views don't match those of my Dr, I would change. I have done so for lesser things.

On a different note - with the sciatica, mine used to be horrific (couldn't sleep though a night, barely drive to work without pain, etc), but it is basically non-existant since I've lost weight, and started yoga. I also used to have chiropractic adjustments when it would become horrific.

Doctors are fallable just like we are... they don't know everything (how can they - it's so hard to keep up on the latest information).

That being said - I would hope my doc would do cartwheels if I dropped 25 pounds in a healthy way!

                        Good job for you!
