I saw a great deal on Bacon at the supermarket today and was interested purchasing it as it was 3lbs and it was buy one, get another free. As I read the label as I do with everything. It stated 0 sugar & 0 carbs. So perfect. But then I read it's cured with sodium and brown sugar. Is this safe to eat? I noticed all the bacon in the cooler demostrated the same thing.

Re: Bacon??? Sugar or No Sugar?
On Atkins you should avoid any form of sugar, and this includes brown sugar. So nope, it's not 'allowed'.
I'm sure there is sugar-free bacon out there, but I live in Germany so can't really help you with names. I'm sure someone in the US will reply a bit later. In Germany, I can find sugar-free bacon if I buy it directly from the butcher."Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

Megs (not2late) explains in a sticky post on the board:
I guess this answers your question. The US labelling laws allow products that contain 0.1 to 0.499999 carb grams to be labelled as 0 carbs and products with 0.5 to 0.9 carb grams to be labelled as less than 1 carb.

Re: Bacon??? Sugar or No Sugar?
On Atkins, added sugar is not allowed. If you want the bacon to be 'legal', it should be sugar free... so no sugar should appear among the listed ingredients."Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

I would try to avoid the sugar-cured bacons too. I picked up some by mistake on my last shopping trip. I shop at Bi-Lo and they have a store brand that has no sugar.
