  • Safety of Atkins for Kidneys

    Hi all,

I;ve been on this WOE for 8 days now and have successfully lost 12 lbs.

My husband has one kidney (lost one to damage from recurrent kidney stones) and that kidney is healthy.

He has about 110 lbs to lose.

Is Atkins safe for him? I know lots of protein can put a strain on the kidneys.

Any help is appreciated. He's so motivated by my success and I know it would help if we were both on the same plan. If it can't be, then we'll do our separate things.

    Thanks so much!

Re: Safety of Atkins for Kidneys

Atkins is not really a high protein way of eating if followed correctly, but a high fat one. On induction we are supposed to be eating about 65% fat/30% protein/5% carbs and keep the protein at around the 30% level throughout our journey, lowering the fat as we add carbs.

Having said that I would suggest making sure his doctor is keeping an eye on things along the way.

And congratulations on those 12 pounds lost in 8 days
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

      From the book...

First a crucial warning: People with severe kidney disease (creatinine over 2.4) should not do any phase of Atkins unless ordered to do so by their physician.
