  • more veggies than proteins??

    Hi everyone,
ok here's the deal, i love the atkins because i feel great eating all the foods, and i feel much healthier.
but i've had this problem for a little way too long and i cant seem to get an answer for it.
i lost 8 pounds first week of induction 2 and a half monthes ago, and since then, i havent lost anything, but ended up gaining 4 pounds in total!
i've been thinking over and over, and came to realize that it would be really crazy to ever think that veggies would make gain weight, or stop weight loss, regardless of the amount comsumed per day. but i know for sure that too much protein does turn in to sugar if was over consumed.
i do understand that atkins is more about fats than proteins, but when i feel the need to eat more, i go for protein with fat, than go for more veggies, because of the carb count.
apparently this isnt working, and im having major digestive problems (which means i hardly go to the bathroom anymore). so im thinking of reducing my protein intake, and increasing my veggies and healthy fats and oils.
    for example:
breakfast--> low carb veggies (lettus, spanich, broccoli, zuccini, mushrooms, green peppers, cooked or dressed in olive oil)

lunch--> some meat, with either olive oil or mayo, and a small salad!

Dinner--> more of the above veggies with healthy fats, and maybe some cheese or and egg or 2

please fill me in on your opinions, as they are really important to me!!

    Thank you

You might want to read this then...

The Blog of Michael R. Eades, M.D. » Another China study

Basically what the study found those who ate more fruits and veggies were more obese.

    Emphasis in quote below mine.
In an effort to figure out what is going on researchers evaluated the diets of almost 3000 Chinese men and women (average age 47 yo) from all walks of life and all educational levels living in rural and urban areas. They found the typical Chinese diet to be
characterized by a high intake of vegetables and other plant foods, and thus the intake of carbohydrates and fiber is high.
When these researchers started evaluating the specifics of the Chinese diet, they found themselves ensnared in a thorny thicket of cognitive dissonance. How they hacked their way out shows just how nutritionally biased researchers are today and how they will twist and turn and torture the data (and outright misrepresent it) to make it confirm their biases.

    ...

I’m pretty certain that when these people decided to do this study their game plan was to divide the study population into quartiles or quintiles of fruit and vegetable consumption. And I’m sure they figured that those subjects in the quartile or quintile of the highest fruit and vegetable consumption would show the least obesity while those in the lowest fraction would show the most. But it didn’t turn out that way for them.

    ...

In fact, it was just the opposite. The researchers did divide the subjects into quartiles (fourths) as a function of fruit and vegetable consumption, and they found that the subjects eating the most fruits and vegetables were the fattest.

well i dont wanna start eating fruits because i know they are higher in carbs and sugar. im only trying to eat more fiberous/legal/low carb veggies. i really cant seem to grasp the fact that healthy veggies can make you stop losing weight or gain weight.
am i the only one who thinks this way?? could i really be wrong?? im sure this is on everyone's mind lol

        Hi Shay,

I'm not sure if this helps you in any way as I don't know what rung you are at, but here's a good OWL rung 1 menu for me.

        Breakfast:
        1 oz swiss cheese
2 cups green leaf lettuce, 1/2 cup radishes, 1/2 cup cucumber slices, 2 medium tomato slices... these with oil and red wine vinegar

        Lunch:
roasted chicken breast OR roasted turkey
1 cup grilled zucchini OR 1 cup fried mushrooms
1 cup green leaf lettuce with oil and vinegar

        Dinner:
        1-2 chicken drumsticks
1-2 oz swiss cheese OR 2 oz cream cheese mixed with 1 tablespoon sour cream and some parsley
2 cups salad (spinach, zucchini, garlic, boiled egg) with some sugar free dressing

Depending on the quantities, this makes something between 1200 and 1600 calories.

I don't think lowering protein will help you in any way. Not sure how much is "some meat", but for a menu of about 1500 calories I would say you should go for at least 80 g protein. I don't know if there are any negative effects of eating little protein (and I'm too lazy to google for it right now) but, unless you eat enormous quantities, protein doesn't make you fat.

I know you don't want to hear this, but you seem to be pretty slim in your picture. You might have either reached goal without you knowing it or you have very little left to lose and your body takes its time.

If you are on track with your calories I can tell you from experience that you body will reset itself in between large weigh losses. For example you may loose 6 pounds one week then the next time you weight it may look like you gained two then the week after you may loose 4-6 pounds. Your body will fill those fat cells with fluid to make up for the loss, when it feels safe to (reset) it will release the extra water weight. This is what some people call a whoosie. You may at times hit spots where your weight will not move for a week to a month, you just have to eat right and exercise through these times and keep positive.

thank you for your responses girls, i really appreciate it.
Georgiana--> the daily menu you suggested actually sounds good to me, and definitley has less amounts of protein than what i consume now. so im going to try that for sure.
but i still dont think i reached my goal. my weight might not be much, but im not by any means thin, or what i define as thin. so i would like to lose more body fat so i can feel better about my self
Dimple Flirt--> i've been on the atkins for over 2 monthes now, and i've never experiences a single wooshi nor did i lose any more weight after my first week on atkins. this is why i need the feel to change up my menu, because i dont feel like its effective for me, and i have a strong beleife that too much protein consumption is the reason for my lack of weight loss. i will exercise more thats for sure, and drink more water, hopefully that will help. and i will make sure to report back in a week or 2 and tell you how everything is going. hopefully i wont gain any more weight :P

One comment to my previous post. When I said "roasted chicken/turkey breast", I was referring to something like 4 oz.

Just thought this is important, because if I tell my brother "roasted chicken breast" he will eat at least 10 oz at a time. (And yes, he's very good looking... so maybe protein doesn't make people fat. )

ahhaaaa...see i think thats my probalem.
im pretty sure i eat way more than 4 oz of meat in one sitting lool. so im gonna cut down on my meat for sure now!!
so yesterday was my brother's engagement dinner, it was held at "Chris's Ruth's Steak house" and i was really impressed with the menu and the choices we had.
i almost didnt change much or didnt have to make orders complicated like i usually do when i eat out :P
im not sure if there's a Chris ruth's steak house exists in the states, but its pretty popular up here in canada.
the appitizers they had were small medium rare lamb chops, along with portabelo mushrooms stuffed with cheese and crab meat (which tasted fantastic) and seemed like a great idea for legal food to make at home.
then a garden salad with blue cheese, and i asked for olive oil on the side
the entree was the best part. it was 2 roasted breast chicken fillet stuffed with cream cheese herbs and garlic. and ofcourse creamy/cheesy spanich dip as well as sauted mushrooms on the side. im telling you guys...it was heavinly!!
so i ate out yesterday and didnt feel guilty or bad for eating all that stuff. it was a great experience and i recomend it for everyone if you get the chance to visit the place!!
                happy low carbing everyone

I don't know if the restaurant exists in the US, but that sounds super yummy! It's also nice when you can find 'legal' meals without having to ask them to replace XxXxX with a veggie side or something.

Hi Shay. To help with trying to figure out if what you're eating is appropriate, using a tracking website (like fitday or dailyplate) can help. It can give you the percentages, which I feel may be what you think you're off on (it should be 65%fat, 30%protein and 5%carbs for induction).

Also, if I remember you correctly from another post, you're looking to have your goal weight show on a BMI chart as being "underweight", so perhaps Atkins is saying that it's not healthy to be pushing your body to do that. If you feel like you look fat, perhaps working out and doing weights would help you feel better about yourself.

You're right about the protein. Dr. ATkins warned that eating too much protein could be counterproductive because excess dietary protein converts to glucose which if not used immediately for energy is converted to glycogen and fat.

Ruth's Chris' Steakhouse is here in the US. It's a great restaurant for low carbers: they will substitute the potato for another portion of veg. And the veg is usually steamed and not drowned with lots of flour-based sauces.

However, I find the meat portions are VERY generous, so I usually eat half of the steak and bring the the remaining half home for a steak salad meal the next day.
