  • Blast off! with sugar free sweets (literally)

    Morning fellow Atkins folk,

Just thought that I would post me experience with suger free sweets.

Whilst shopping at the local supermarket here in Melbourne I noticed a large selection of suger & carb free sweets, much better tan back home in the UK. Anyway, I bought a few bags as anti snack aid and to get rid of the dead dog taste in the mouth.

After eating approximately 8 sweets my tummy started to gurgle, just 5 minuets later and I was making an Olympic bid for the toilet. I know that these things can cause a laxative effect.... but wow or should that be whoosh.

Anyone else had the ole' trotts on the Atkins? I remember the first time round it was the other problem, thought that i would never need the toilet again.

    Chris

Sugar alcohols do that to some people.. I think especially maltilol?

So now if you have the 'other problem' you know what to do!

when I was on some diet once before... I ate the Russell Stover mint patties... and they were so good... and while I didn't have that problem... I had the most painful stomach ache I've ever had in my LIFE.... I thought I'd die... and NO antacid or anything would help it.... I seriously thought my stomach would explode.... so now... I go really easy on those things.. if at all.. (the ones with nuts and caramel didn't do it to me... just the dark chocolate mint patties)

wow sounds like I'm not the only person to have this problem.

Have to say that my tummy is still turning over today, not good but highly amusing as you can hear it over the radio.

*oops, there it goes again.... runs off to toilet

Maltitol is the worst culprit. It is hard for the enzymes in the intestines to breal down these Polyols so just like fibre they go straight through.

No kidding! So the first time i went on atkins, I tried the sugar free chocolates from trader joes, and my roomate and I ended up with stomach aches just short of calling an ambulance.

I thought maybe something had changed, so i tried them again this time. Small tummy ache and an experience similar to the original post in this thread...i wont go into details.

I still eat them when i really need a sweet fix, I just know I'll end up in the bathroom soon after

I made the mistake early in my Atkins journey of buying a packet of sugar-free assorted toffees and found them really tasty and while watching TV somehow I kept eating them till the whole packet was empty.

I spent the whole night sitting on the toilet. You know the saying 'the bottom dropped out of my world'? Well that night I was sure the world had dropped out of my bottom!!

Bad to say, but I think the more you eat it, the more your stomach gets use to the side effects.

I guess I must be one of the lucky few. Never had a problem w/ them.

Although I hardly ever eat SF candy, but never had any of this happen

Well needless to say that one didn't learn his lesson and I ate more last night. In fact, I'm eating one right now... The strange thing is when one isn't on Atkins I have absolutely no cravings for sweets.

Here in Australia I've found that there is a massive range of sugar free sweets, something to suit everyone. Unlike the UK where you are lucky if you can get your hands on a packet of sugar free mints. The strange this is, I have notice that the Australians do spend a lot more time in the toilet.

Gurlgle, oh someone please stop me from eating another...

Re: Blast off! with suger free sweets (literally)

My take on the sugar alcohol sweetened sweets is this.

If they give me the bathroon effect then my body is not processing them so the sugar alcohol carbs do not neet to be counted, BUT if they don't affect me and I can eat them without any after effects then my body IS processing them as normal sugar carbs and so I ought to include every pesky carb in my counts.

This means I very seldom bother with them and tend to look for a proper lowcarb substitute instead of wasting my carbs on one small 'treat'.

Ah, this is something new to me, you are saying that these sweets should be included in my carbs, even if they state 0 carbs?

Oh dear, does this mean i've bombed out on my first week completely?

Mmm, Russell Stover... You're right, you can never find SF candy in the UK! In the US however, I tend to get my hands on too much of it.

I take advantage of the side affects, so the SF products are treats for when I need them lol.

The mint patties are the best for me. I remember finding them in Tescos on one odd occassion (I wasnt even on Atkins at the time) and despite them being almost £5 a bag, I bought a load of them. Not too good then.

No - it just means you overdid your sweetener limit if you had more than 3 sweetened foods/drinks in one day.
