Re: Blast off! with suger free sweets (literally)

Ooh, I can totally sympathise. I've had to make a quick dash for the toilet on more than one occasion! It feels worse though when it doesn't make me have to go but it just stays awful and gurgly in my tummy! Ouch!

I've found some sweets are better than others for this...the ones I've gotten from Russell Stovers (from the US not the UK unfortunately!) generally cause the laxative effect but not too bad but the Boots brand sugar free stuff kills me- it just hurts my stomach and fruitella sugar free chewy things are terrible! I can just have one chew and I'm running for the toilet!

The side effect I found and it seems as though your getting this one as well is that the more you have the more you crave ........ one of the points of Atkins WOE is to rid your body if it's reliance on sweets and to learn not to cave to cravings. For me giving myself a "legal cheat" eventually leads to real cheating........ IMHO stay away from them.

My wife and I have bought these SF candies serving size between 4 and 7 pieces. But we eat maybe 1 at most 2 out of the serving size of 4 to 7 in a day and not every day.. So far nothing noticed as far as stalling or stomach problems..

Ive found a few low carb icecreams that work out. bars or just plain ice cream. Those haven't bothered me at all. Also they have a lot less total carbs and fake sugar than the russel stovers, i avoid those at all costs, cause one serving equates to many packets of splenda. and as far as i know, sugar alcohals can cause stalls and slow metabolisms. boo to that.

Sadly i fell off the wagon...HOWEVER im back on starting today 8/21/09 (176lb)

If you ate 8 pcs. you were not using them to stop a snacking binge, you were one one. I 1-3 a day which I find actually helps keep me regular and helps the weight loss. My wife has to be more moderate because they stall her.

Oh yeah! Sh** yourself thin! LOL
Yup, tried diabetic chocolate. "May have mild-laxative effect!" I'll say!
Still, next time you have the opposite and are all bunged up, you'll know what to eat to unbung you!

I did not think that SF lollies/candy was allowed on Atkins???

I have found some carb free mints (by Equal) but they have that malitol (??)stuff in them and I did not think that I could have them so did not buy them.

But if I can have some SF mints then I might try them occasionally because sometimes when I am out with work, it would be nice to have something like this.

not as far as sugar free sweets go - but when i was doing the 'ol low fat thing - I had bought a box of the Fiber One Bars after they'd JUST come out. And let me tell you - they were DANG tasty - so I ended up having 2 (possibly 3?) that day...well - there's like 8 grams of fiber PER bar...

my stupid butt had these a few hours before my (now best friend)'s bachelorette party...yeah - i spent that entire party (at a Howl at the Moon Bar) in their bathroom!!!!

not that any atkineers would/could eat those things anyways - but come to learn those also have High Fructose Corn Sh** in them too...

Learned my lesson - never ate those again!

There are many companies offering sugarfree sweets in UK, as well as the online lowcarb websites most shops like Boots , M&S and even your loval corner shop will sell a variety.

As with all processed foods you need to look at labels to make sure all ingredients are allowed on your Atkins phase.

However you will have to count them in your 3 servings max of sweeteners per day along with any desserts or sweet foods you make and sweetened drinks, which will mean making a conscious decision as to which you choose to eat each day.

There isn't a specific rung of OWL where we are allowed more sweetened food/drinks, so the '3 a day' rule really counts for ever on Atkins as far as I have found in DANDR.

This should make sure you don't get too much gastric problems from them as all sugar alcohol sweetened foods carry the caveat 'too much of this may have a laxative effect'

BTW as has been said in many threads about 'sweet' if the sugar alcohols in them do not give you the 'bathroom effect' then your body is probably absorbing and processing them like normal carbohydrates so you would need to count every pesky carb of them and the diabetic association in USA suggests nowadays that diabetics count half the carbs of sugar alcohols.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                        Thank you Elizellen,
I think I will leave them alone - it just does not sound like it is worth it to me...

I have no cravings at all these days and it is such a good feeling - even watching friends have dessert and all the while, I genuinely don't want it because I have just had a nice dinner of salad and steak or salmon... This happened tonight - I watched them all race to the dessert table to get their food and I sat there enjoying the last of my steak and salad with a tall glass of cold water.

I am enjoying this 'control' I have over food these days. It is such a great feeling because food has always controlled me in the past
