  • Getting ready to start Atkins, but Atkins causes pain in my leg?

I have done Atkins before, and I also have back problems that cause pain to go down my left leg. About a month and a half ago, I had back surgery to remove part of a disk that was bulging and pressing on a nerve in my back.

Well my problem is, even before I had severe back pain, whenever I went on Atkins, I had worse pain in my leg than before. I try to take vitamins, but it doesn't seem to help. I don't want anything to give me a reason to go off of it this time, but I am dreading the pain that it causes in my leg.

BTW, I am still having pain in my left leg even after the surgery, so it didn't really help it much. The doctor says it takes longer for nerves to heal. Anyway, I guess what I am wondering is does anyone else have problems with it causing pain in your legs? I know also when I was on it, if I stretched in my sleep, I would have to jump out of bed due to terrible leg cramps! Does anyone have any suggestion on what to do or what kind of vitamins to take to prevent this?

I've had these also, cramps. I use potassium/iodine salt. I think there are also other supplements that can help.

Bumping for those in the know!

I get terrible leg cramps that make my leg mucsles hurt for about a week. My doctor said to take extra calcium but that hasn't helped. It really gets painful.

My readings in the Atkins Book states leg cramps can be a cause of loss of electrolytes. Try drinking water with electrolytes to see if that helps.
Next thing says taking additional calcium and magnesium supplements...
I would try drinking water first and see if that helps. It did for me.

Potassium will help with muscle cramps. Calcium w/ magnesium helps, too (and helps keep things "regular"). Calcium also has calming properties, so it's great before bed.

Nerve pain is hard!! I have problems due to an accident and some days it's tough. When you get the OK from the doc, stretching exercises will help.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I get terrible leg cramps as well .........a combination of calcium and potassium has helped mine go completely away but if I slck off for awhile taking them they come right back ....... also stay well hydrated. As far as the nerve pain I'm not sure.
