  • Gained but I don't feel it

Arggh! I have only been on for about 2-1/2 weeks. I got on the scale this morning and to my horror saw that I gained 2 pounds. I felt sure I would be down. I feel thinner. Frustrating. I am still in "small" ketosis.

It is not uncommon to fluctuate a bit. If you ate anything too carby, something you reacted to, or something very salty you may retain some water and shows up on the scales. On women normal hormonal changes also can cause water retention and will show up on the scale. It is not really fat you have gained. It takes a lot of calories to put on a pound over night.
You may want to list your menu in the menu forum and people will see if there was something there that did this.

Are you losing inches? If you feel thinner, you probably are. Sometimes it takes the scale a while to catch up and the extra two lbs could be just a normal fluctuation.
Try not to get discouraged. Drink lots of water and hang in there.
If you're still not seeing results in a while, try posting a menu or two in the "Review my Menu" forum.

Are you exercising? You could be gaining muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. I am sure that is what is happening to me. I am working out a lot, and my clothes feel looser, but the scale is not showing a huge loss. So don't let the scale spook you.

I am exercising, but I always have. I feel less bloated than I did before starting Atkins.

I really should have started in January. I have a few rough weeks ahead with the family holiday stuff (Italian family) and other parties. I know there will be a few days where I won't be good. I hope to minimize the impact by getting right back on. I already knew that going in to this, but I couldn't justify doing nothing to help myself for the whole month of December.

I feel for you with an Italian family... I've lived in Italy for around 30 years and have my hub's entire clan to contend with! It can be done though... and very quickly, you get so used to low carbing (and they get used to you low carbing too) that it becomes very easy.
I hardly miss any of those carby things now and on the rare occasions when I do, I've found lots of substitutes. You will too.

As for the upcoming festivities... just think how terrific you'll feel if you make it through the holidays without weakening! Don't decide to cheat now. Rather, take things day by day... and when you find yourself surrounded by all those illegal foods, think of yourself at goal before taking that first fatal bite.

Well worth a try, and I bet you can do it!

How has your sodium consuption been? Perhaps you're just retaining a bit of water right now due to a little more salt in your diet...just something to consider? I know for me I'm totally triggered by sodium and the water retention gets me quick if I'm not careful....hang in there and don't worry about 2lbs, it will come off.

I have been doing Atkins since July of this year and have had a number of times when the scales went up two to five pounds overnight and then dropped the next day...it was due to sodium...I think it's my Kryptonite LOL!!! I have to be extremely careful with it.

My family is Sicilian (well on my dad's side they are all Siciallian- my mom's side is Scottish, Irish, English and Welsh) and I can totally relate to the food challenges!!! I know you can get through this, the food challenges that occur with our particular culture (family gatherings) will happen throughout the entire year....I'm glad you didn't wait till January...hang in there, you'll do just fine!!!!
