    When Dr. Atkins wrote the first book (with another writer), all he had to go on was what he had read from historical low carb diets (Banting, et al) and the results of his losing 30 odd pounds following a really low carb diet.

    He spent the first years fighting doing any research--all he knew was that it worked--and that's all he wanted to know.

    His later books were after he treated more than 25,000 patients and indeed did research. He also changed his mind after being on the diet for so many years, and it stopped working for him. He made changes after that. That's when he knew he had to exercise, even though he hated it.

    It's all in his biography. A really good read.

        Hi Kevin,
        I have enjoyed reading this thread. I too began this program in the 70's and was guilted into doing low fat and regained my weight. I was conflicted when I tried to get back on becuase of the differrances. The point of no carbs (five at tops)for the first 5 days was to get into ketosis fast where the appitite reduction kicked in and the energy did too. Hidden carbs made it impossible to really get to 5 for me. I was a Dr. Stillman fan before Atkins. I noticed a loss in appitite on his plan too. The varible I found interesting was "eat until satisfied" since I was an emotional eater sometimes I was not satified until it was all gone. Now when I eat out I choose foods I would want to take home and have later. Some omelets are great reheated. When I think of a resturant meal as a normal portion and only eat half I can see that I am eating less protien and cholesterol than I did when I ate the intire meal when I was not on the Atkins WOE. I too believe he caved to public oppinion but I am willing to go with it. This is day 9 for me and I am straining my eyes to see some pink on my sticks. I am avoiding the person who guilted me last time and enjoying the freedom I feel with this plan compared to all the others with so many restrictions. Thank you for your interesting review of the Atkins revolution.

          Keep in mind that in some restaurants they put pancake batter in their breakfast omelets. So you'd better ask before you order.

            What freaked me out was breadcrumbs in the "seasoning" that a lot of places add to tuna salad!!

              In 2002, this really isn't said. He says several times that you are burning your own fat, but never that you are not burning dietary fat. He also says the famous don't count calories, but they do matter, but there is the metabolic advantage that helps.

              The examples of what people were eating in the 1972 book was amazing. Pounds and pounds of food. Now, in the 2002 book, portions are reduced and the large portions are gone from the examples.

              Anyone else notice these things?
              Yes, I noticed this too and the other things that are different..........

              1972 Atkins does not count "net" carbs, but total carbs.

              There were no products back in 1972, but in 2002, there was an explosion of low carb products that had hit the scene............
