  • why desserts are necessary

My boyfriend got me involved in this wol 2 yrs ago. it was easy for me, and I lost 60 lbs. the problem is, my bf, at 5'9" weighs 325 lbs and did not want to go on the diet with me. He would try, but fail each time, because he felt so deprived. He likes to cook, likes the tastes of so many foods, and dieting just got to his mind. I would gently push, and say things like, ok, so you can't eat 20 carbs or less, just try eating LESS carbs. this approach seems to work. but there are times when he says, I have to have something sweet. the recipe board comes in so handy. I'll go to the board, and make him something. I don't say, ok, count each mouthful, instead I say, here, here is something you can eat and it satisfies him. He doesn't go off the diet, granted, he doesn't always eat as few carbs as 'success', but he has lost weight. not everyone has the best will power in the world, if that were the case, none of us would be overwieght. In his case, having the options of lower carb anything, helps keep him on track. If I can get him thru a day with under say, 50 carbs, I consider that a highly successful day.

Hats off to you that is a very smart approach. We had a thread here a bit ago about someone who started her husband on Atkins but "backwards" - just a gradual reduction of carbs to make it easier. I though that was smart too.

I have to say I am much like your bf seems. I like food, and being home most of the day with my daughter and having to have it available to me all day long is a real challenge. I have a weakness for sugar and potatoes and when I deprive myself of pasta and breads I tend to crave them even though they are not my favorite carb enemies. So, I decided to gently nudge myself in the "lower carbs a day" direction before trying to begin induction. My husband tells me I am a failure, but I feel I am only setting me up for success. The thing I realize that he does not, is I am me, and he is him.
Who said life was easy? Whoever it was should walk a day in my shoes.
