My wife tried Jenny Craig and failed miserably. There is nooooo way an average person could eat like that forever. I did my research before I jumped in feet first. I knew I had to choose something that would be a lifestyle change, not a "diet that I would try". I like atkins because there is a lifelong plan that puts all of the choices in your hand ultimately. Just my 2 cents. GOod luck and HAppy NEw Year!

I've tried alot of them. Weight Watchers, LA Weightloss, Nutrisystem, etc. And spend a lot of wasted money doing it. Oh, sure I lost a little weight on each of them but it was never permanent. With Weight Watchers and LA Weightloss I couldn't stand being hungry all the time. I would get done eating and be hungry an hour later! With Nutrisystem I got sick of prepackaged food and wanted some real home cooking.

I definitely think I have found what I was looking for.
I WILL learn to feel comfortable in my own body again!

Re: What other diets have tried b4? failed or succeeded?

I have tried reducing calories and eating less. The only thing that happens when I try that is that I become so focussed on food that I eat more. It is ridiculous. I knew when I seriously decided to look into losing weight that I had to look at low carb.

Re: What other diets have tried b4? failed or succeeded?

I'm not sharing to promote them, but just to say that I've attempted these ways with nothing that supported me making life style changes....

Weight Watchers....spent waaaay too much money on their junk food and drove myself (and my family) nuts counting points and I was hungry all the time...did nothing for my metabolism either.
Cabbage Diet (aka: Mayo Clinic Diet).....starvation is a word for this one, along with gas
Grapefruit Diet....seriously didn't have to worry about scurvy for sure....but it wasn't filling
No white food during the week, but eat whatever on the weekend....good for those who start their diets on Monday with the same or more weight than they started with the week before
Slim Fast....starvation is a word, again, for this one

Atkins is the only one that I've had success with losing weight and making life style changes. Even though there's struggles along the way (like I'm going through right now), it's a reasonable life style change that makes sense.

Re: What other diets have tried b4? failed or succeeded?

I did Jenny Craig three different times, all of which I DID lose weight, but failed miserably because I stopped going to my appointments, hating the food, and just going back to my old eating habits.

With Atkins I don't have to worry about portions so much, which is mainly what Jenny Craig is. I can easily go out to eat and order a salad and a steak or chicken.

Of course I tried low calorie, too... but each time only lasted about 12 hours... ;-)

the grapefruit diet, the cayenne pepper/lemon/maple syrup diet, the starvation diet, the count-my-calories diet, cabbage soup diet, this weight-loss shake that was advertised one of those magazine ads, the all-egg diet.

Re: What other diets have tried b4? failed or succeeded?

Here are all the "diets" I have tried:

Cabbage Soup- Took off about 7lbs but gained it all back. I was miserable and gassy the whole time.

Master Cleanse- Took off 9lbs in the first 5 days and then quit. I couldnt starve myself any longer. Not too mention that I only kept it off for about three months.

Jenny Craig- EXPENSIVE LESSON. I took off about two pounds per week, but I was going broke the entire time, and if I ate if three buffalo wings, I would lose a whole week of progress. Its insane. I finally quit because I realized that even if I lost all of the weight, I would have done it relying solely on THEIR food, so where would that leave me for maintenance? I wasnt taught how to eat. I was just fed.

Weight Watchers: It was good but I got tired of the frozen foods and I got tired of adding points and it just got boring honestly.

B12 shots and a diet plan: I lost 40lbs in four months. I kept it off for about nine months but then I got pregnant. So far this is the most effective diet I ever did, because I learned how to eat and I exercised a lot. I think I learned that there is no magic cure for being fat, but hard work and mental dedication.

ATKINS- Ahhhhh... I like this diet. I think that training your body to burn fat efficiently is a great thing. I dont think its any easier than any other diet, you have guidelines and commitment but it can be done. I think the great thing about it is that you get to eat a ton of great foods without the guilt or consequences. I am on day 8 now and have only lost about two pounds but I only got into ketosis two days ago. I believe its healthy to shed about two pounds per week so I am okay with my progress. I just keep trucking. The hardest thing about this diet is staying away from cakes, because I cant forget how much I love them, however, bison steak and asparagus isnt too shabby either. I think this will work for me, because the limitations are...well limited.

Re: What other diets have tried b4? failed or succeeded?

Weightwatchers: lost 30 pounds, gained back some, then lost 16. i always ate more than my points and managed to keep losing. eventually i hit a stall but i just can't eat any less cuz i get so cold and i don't think its good for me. so i'm switching to atkins. i did like weightwatchers because they were so supportive and friendly though.

Lowfat: tried a super lowfat diet and lost... absolutely nothing! i think this type of high carb diet isn't good for me.

I've mentioned before that I've tried many diets over the years and have, like you, investigated many more. During that investigation I came to the conclusion that a low-carb plan is a natural one. Atkins is a great start to this way of eating/way of life.

The more I read, however, about the transgressions of our food industry the more convinced I've become that we need to completely rethink our food choices. Not only do we need to eliminate most grain from our diets but also eliminate those foods that are fed grain. Grains, soy and seeds, as either a protein base or as 'heart healthy' oils, are lacking in the essential fats our body needs to work properly; heavy on omega 6, missing 3.

Grass/algae fed proteins are the obvious choice, along with simple servings of vegetables.

I've also looked into some intermittent fasting. That's an interesting option as far as timed caloric intake (not a reduced intake).

The addictive quality of carbs is reason enough to believe they aren't good for us to eat.

In short, a low-carb diet plan is really the only one that will work in the long term.

Re: What other diets have tried b4? failed or succeeded?

i started doing the atkins back in september. i lost 8 pounds of water weight the first weekd, and i havent been able to lose anymore since.
Recently, after i went all out during the holiday, and basically ended up gaining those 8 pounds back, i decided to go on a low (but not too low) carb diet. which consists of unlimited amounts of veggies, low carb high fiber breads and cerial, and alittle bit of protien. plus i had to watch my calories, so i would consume about 1100 cal/aday
i feel that this diet works better for me 4 two reasons.first is because when i was on the atkins, i had major constipation issues, and my monthly cycle went all out of wack. now that i eat more healthy carbs from wholewheats and multigrains with tons of fibre, i feel alot healthier and im back to normal again. second, is because i didnt start out with alot of weight to begin with, even now after i've gained weight back, i only weigh 135 lbs, so eating alot of fatty foods didnt help in buring the little amount of fat i had in me.
now i lose about 3 pounds a week, which would be great if i dont end up cheating on weekends lol

I have only tried Weight Watchers and Atkins. I went on Weight Watchers for 6 weeks and never lost a pound. I was STARVING all the time and when I did eat, I would fill up on empty carbs because those were the foods with the lowest points besides veggies and fruit. I hated every second of it. I felt weak and lethargic most of the time.

                              OK - let me think.....

                              1. 1982-85 - my very first diet - modified lowfat

                              2. 85 - 86 "The Diet Center" They were located right beside my fitness center so we sort of "combined" our programs because it was easy. I had just had my daughter and needed to lose about 50 pounds. I really, really blew up during pregnancy gaining over 80 pounds. Lost it all though - but I was 23 and a fitness trainer si it wasn't all that hard at that age.

                              3. 1986 - 1996 - I taught aerobics constantly so I ate whatever I wanted after the baby weight came off

                              4. 1996 - Sold both fitness centers after being diagnosed with a herniated disk, spinal stenosis, and grade 2 spondylithesis (unstable spine) It was at this time my career as a fitness trainer changed. I began then conducting fitness workshops and doing lectures for AFAA and ACE, but my weight was steadily climbing. I felt so embarrassed being a size "8" covered up in a tracksuit when all the instructors remembered me as the choreographer that was size two.

                              5. 1997 - Jenny Craig (for 6 weeks - the absolute worst food imaginable - Lean Cuisine's would have been much better!) I lost the wieght but it was a horrible and expensive diet.

During this time, I floated around but did buy myself an elliptical trainer and put a pool in an maintained a good weight by exercising and practicing a lot of moderation. I gave up as a fitness trainer completely and began a new career as an interior designer. Eventually, my weight climbed. My husband an I like to travel and go boating and s0 I added a few pounds each year - but struggled and stayed under a size 6.

                              5. 2002 - 2006 - first Atkin's then modified low carb - lost back down to a size 2 and was delighted! It was easy too! Never flet better in my whole life!

                              6. 12/2006 - 9/2006 - Weight Watcher's - I began this because my husband was diagnosed with gout and was told this was what he needed to do. It worked in the short term, but I was very, very hungry - (calorie restriction sucks) I also found out though that I had reatvie hypoglycemia......

So - after a year of a "modified" W.W. - I have gained the weight I lost back, my husbands gout got worse, his lipid profile unhealthy and we ended up with a ravenous appetite to boot. Hubby said he was going against doctors advise and going back to low carb. He had lost 40 pounds on low carb the first time and now, he was bigger than ever after failing on Weight Watchers. He didn't care about the gout. He felt he was going to die if he didn't take off the weight.

                              7. 2009 - Atkin's OWL (low close to induction right now) and then I'll go back to modified after I lose the weight again

Husband said last night "Oh my gosh - GROUNDHOG DAY is finally over!" He has lost 9 pounds doing a very modified induction plan! I no longer have reactive hypoglemia. His gout has gone DOWN - way down - after one week. I can't wait to see what his lipids will be this March!!!
