  • Canadian Redwood Whiskey ??

    Hiya
I'm from the UK and got given a bottle of Canadian Redwood Whiskey. I was just wondering if anyone knew if this is like a normal distilled whiskey that has 0 carbs...???

All I could find is that it is a "light rye whiskey" and I don't know what that means.

You do know that alcohol is rung 5, and that while you are drinking booze, you will burn that instead of fat? It will also cause a false positive ketosis reading for up to three days if you use ketostix to judge ketosis.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

I think that is up to the individual. My case, I had Jameson whiskey on the weekends, and even some weekdays and still lost like 25lbs of my 30 lb goal. Beer a big no no. Maybe contributes to how fast you lose, but I had no problem with it. Only problem I had was getting a bit buzzed and catching myself looking in the fridge for some carbs, lol.

A poster above was right when she said, you will burn the alcohol first, but honestly, in my opinion, any pounds you are NOT putting on yourself, and anything that takes the ease off of dieting without really "sabataging" it is fine for me.

Straight distilled Grain alcohols have no carbs in them, and with the exception of rum, no added sugars.

How about "Sourthern Comfort"? That's kind of a sweet tasting whiskey....makes me wonder if it has carbs in it. It is one that I can drink on the "rocks". No mixers.

Southern Comfort has about 4 carbs per 100ml (3.5 fluid ounces) apparently.

I imagine the whiskey has zero carbs if isn't sweet tasting.

Why don't you put it in a secure place and save it until you're at or near goal... not that I'm promoting alcohol as a goal, but now might not be the best time for enjoying your gift. I'm sure it'll save.

Red Wine is the best (if there is a best) @ .5 gm per 100ml instead of 4gm for Southern Comfort. No wonder Atkins allows wine but doesn't recommend hard liquor.
Now the tier 5 makes sense.

No liquor, including wine is 'allowed' until you reach the alcohol rung.

Canadian whiskey, also knowns as 'rye', is a zero carb spirit.

Thanks everyone... I know I'm not on rung 5 yet (far from it) and have only just finished a clean Induction... and I understand that any alchohol will be burned first before fat.. so I am slowing my own progress down But (and please don't get mad) but as for once I want this to be my Way Of Life and to stick too it.. I thought if i allow myself a glass or two a few times a week.... (as I in the UK its very hard not to drink as its a major part of life here,) and by doing this I know the weight will come off slower but I think I will have more chance of sticking to the way of eating and incorporating it in my life.
I don't mean I'm going to make it a free for all and go mad or anything.. as I'm determined to get this weight off and most certainly not all the time or every week.. but I think if I cut all vices I have more chance of failing at some point.......

Anyway the bottle has been put away.. I had two small ones last night with diet coke... and now it can stay there till next week sometime... and I have my water in hand and on I continue...

Thank you everyone for your advise and support

Side Note Rant. Could we all agree to never ever ever think that drinking is a national past time of any individual country ever again? Good god I get annoyed by people who think that getting a buzz is some exclusive ritual that America, Australia, Ireland, the UK, etc has going. Seriously. People drink everywhere.

As for the topic, if you want to do Atkins, you would be better to hold off, but if you can moderate it and keep the weight coming off obviously it is better than nothing. I personally think you should hold yourself a bit more accountable and wait a bit longer before indulging in something that is likely to slow you down, but opinions and a-holes, right?

This rationale could be applied to any of us. Take me for instance: I am a true daughter of the South in the United States, and a Southern Baptist from birth. In a Southern Baptists' life, you grow up on fried chicken, big pans of gravy, mashed potatoes and hot, homemade rolls, buttermilk biscuits (not cookies) and cornbread. We put sugar in nearly all our vegetables, some people more than others. Add fresh coconut cake and banana pudding and we are talking Southern Cookin' at its best. We slather on homemade jams and jellies and we drink sweet tea. If you want to let someone know you are from the North (Yankee), just ask for unsweetened tea in a restaurant. To turn down grits and sweet tea is practically sacrilege.

We don't ever drink alcohol (true Southern Baptists), but these starchy, high carbohydrate foods are a way of life in the South. It's a part of who we are. Do you see where I'm going with this? I could insert my "way-of-life foods" where you use the word "drink" and it is the exact same principal.

I grew up on a farm, so we had some kind of home-baked bread at each meal. My fondest memories of my Mom are associated with her delicious bread. I remember learning how to bake with her. She knew she could lure all the kids (10 of us) home to eat if she made homemade rolls. The smells of baking bread still bring back fond memories.

In order to lose weight and keep it off, I have had to give up bread completely. It was not easy and it was not fun, but I had to do it. Forever, because I found I was allergic to wheat. You crave what you are allergic to, addicted to, or sensitive to. For me it was bread/baked goods. For you it is probably alcohol.

It's still your choice. It's your life, and you have to live it the best way for you. I just want you to have a clear picture of the mechanics of carb addiction and diet. There are physical reasons we can't "give up" certain food and drink. There are physical as well as mental reasons for why we crave them and feel like life won't be the same without them. If you can't give up something for 14 days, it's a problem for you. If you can't wait until the fifth rung, it's a problem for you.

                      Sunny!
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Atkins 2002 doesn't specifically say "rungs" or "tiers" but what I meant by Tier 5 is "Step 5" in the OWL ladder where Atkins states you CAN add wine and other liquors low in carbs. Sorry I wasn't more clear.

I know we confuse newcomers to the board as well by talking about the 'rungs' of OWL, where Dr Atkins called them 'levels' in DANDR!
