  • Maltitol??

    Hi all,

I have a quick question, does Maltitol is permited in indiction.

I have this Joseph Syrop as a gift asn it has a big lable saying "0 GRAM NET CARB IMPACT PER SERVING"

But then in the Nutrition Fact says that is 9g Carb , Sugar = 0, Maltitol = 9g

    Thanks,

    sarah

Nope, it's a frankenfood. During induction all artificial sweetners are strictly verbooten. Sugar alcohols are in that category. Stick to natural foods.

      Re: Maltitol??

Malitol is a sugar alcohol. It is allowed. The general rule about sugar alcohol is that we do not count it like fiber. But everyone will actually react well to it. Some of us absorb some of the carbs and we have to count the carbs and some of us (and this includes me) get gassy and other stomach issues with malitol. To me it works as a laxative. So start with a very small serving and see who you do.

Here is a sticky on sugar alcohol

And just adding to say that I agree with tfek, sweeteners can be really tricky to deal with.

Liv, you are right as usual. I thought I had you, but p128 lists malitol as acceptable. You made me hit the book again!

            Re: Maltitol??

After consulting with DANDR and the Atkins Essentials, Malitol does not affect blood sugar, and therefore, like fiber does not need to be counted. Liv?

Well that is just it. Nobody knows. It is an individual thing. The Diabetics organization tells its members to count half of them to be sure. So that is what I would recommend. If you get gassy you likely do not process them then you can count 0. But do not go far from a toilet.

You can read this fact sheet about sugar alcohols.

                Re: Maltitol??

whaooo, you just made me really happy!!! I don't like splenda or sweetners in general, and this stuff taste great...

I've been in induction since 01/12 with 154 lib and today I've 147...very stricted about everything, exept cream and cheese..I use them more that should.

I which Cream and Cream Cheese could be eat free will...so I could mix it with my new syrop.

                THANKSSS
                (sorry x my English)

                  Re: Maltitol??

I bought some "carb free" mints that were listed as carb free buut had no fat or protein eith and 20cal?? I was so confused until the ingredients sadi malitol 85%.

Obviously they still provide calories but may not have an affect on blood sugar.

But I do have to add, like others, my stomach swelled up after only 5 pieces. It was really not worth it because I was at work and needless to say i had the toilet key around my neck for the day :S

But if I ever need a laxative that tastes good, I will definitely get these again lol
