  • what do you guys think of...

what do you guys do with foods when - the nutritional information SAYS 0 grams of carbs and 0 grams of sugar - yet in the ingredients list, there is sugar listed as an ingredient?

example - I bought some already cooked sausage. says 0 g carbs/0 g sugar per serving - yet there's sugar in the ingredients list...

should i just let my fiance have them?

or should i count 1 g carbs or something such as per serving since the ingredients include sugar?

So what we know is that it has carb but less than one for the serving size that they are listing. Counting one is a good thing.
Personally I avoid things with added sugar as much as I possible can.

I believe that the labelling laws are that if it's under 1g (ie .99) they can list it as zero, so as Liv says you're best to count it as one.

yeah - I also saw a lot of ingredient lists where it'll say "0" yet underneath the ingredients (after it lists sugar) it'll say - "not a significant amount of sugar - 2%" or something like that.

i HATE that it's even in there - however i don't have the time in the morning to cook sausage (since my fiance and i get up at the same time and we are both using our small stove at the same time) and so i love the already / fully cooked sausage i can just pop in the microwave and this one i bought yesterday SAYS 0 g carbs/ 0 g sugar (but again, lists sugar in the ingredients) - whereas all other fully cooked SAYS 1g carbs/1 g sugar in their nutritional information.

it shouldn't be this hard to buy food on this diet - but MAN everything has freakin' sugar in it!

            here is a secret...
            you can't totally avoid it.
just be sure to round up and add the carb to your count for the day.
Add these products in slowly so you can see if it affects your weight loss.
Sometimes the combinations of these chemicals and sugars will slow you down.

When I add things to my diet, I keep an eye on my blood sugar to see if something affects it.
            Here is an example....
            my wife loves icecream.
So, I made a batch of the atkins low carb frozen custard in the atkins recipe book. It is 2 cups of heavy cream, 4 egg yolks, 2 tsp vanilla, 2 tbsp sf instant pudding, and 8 packets of splenda.
Fairly low carb count overall. But that much splenda did something to my blood sugar. Overnight it went up. This was the third time I have made that icecream and the third time I woke up with my blood sugar at 130. Now, that is not really high blood sugar, but when I don't eat the icecream, it is always around 100. So, note to self, don't eat much of that icecream!

Truth is, it is hard to totally avoid sugars. You just have to account for them and do your best. I would much rather see someone eat a breakfast sausage with 1g of sugar than a stack of pancakes dripping in syurp with 10,000g of sugar.

You can account for the 1g easily.

This drives me NUTS. If it's not "a significant amount", if it's so tiny and meaningless, WHY do they have to put it in the product in the first place???

Yeah, I count stuff like that as 1 g/serving too.

Also, you have to remember that sometimes the sugar is from another ingredient.
Like Bfast sausage has maple flavoring in it, the sugar comes from that, but they have to list it.

VERY TRUE...it's so maddening to know that it's pretty much impossible to avoid sugar - but i completely agree that 1 g of sugar in sausage is a MUCH better option than pancakes

                  ::homer simpson drool:: mmmmmmmmmm pancakes...(haha)
