Re: Oprah just said she is doing low carb!!

I think Togagirl is right... Oprah has a history. I mean, she lost weight this last time eating like Bob Greene recommended... and no one is faulting that plan, which is just "moderation" and "good choices," right? Oprah has tried lots of diets... I'm guessing most people won't expect this one to be any different. However, I'm personally hoping the benefits of low-carb will change her life in an amazing way!

Besides, Atkins has long been a target. I mean, it's not like it currently has good rap -- I can't imagine the uninformed being much more critical than they already are! So, maybe she can improve its reputation, but I doubt she can soil it anymore... At least she said she was having "eggs and avocado" for breakfast and not "eggs and bacon."

Re: Oprah just said she is doing low carb!!

I thought Oprah did Low Carb to lose her weight before. I picked up hints during different show segments that pointed in that direction but never did come right our and say it. Perhaps she didn't want to go public with the info because of the negative press on the low-carb lifestyle. IMHO

I can remember years ago, Oprah slammed low carb diets. I think it was went she got super skinny with the trainer Bob Greene. I can remember the show because she said she would never do the diet with low carbs that give you bad breath ever again. Hard to say what she is really doing.

Re: Oprah just said she is doing low carb!!

Oprah and Dr. Oz asked for personal weight loss stories a few months back.... people who needed to lose and were retreads really struggling -- I sent one in! I'm sure I would have heard by now had they been interested. But, it was fun to consider. I was hoping I could get a chef and personal trainer out of it. Okay, I'm really going to stop commenting on this thread now. I swear I'm not an Oprah-freak. Really I'm not.

Re: Oprah just said she is doing low carb!!

I'm taking it she said she's doing low carb and not Atkins per say? Low carb could mean many things. When I saw her first weight show two weeks ago she talked about doing lower carb, which included oatmeal for some breakfasts, and a sweet potato with dinner etc. NO breads sugars starches etc. Which is still definately low carb...

I'd be willing to bet she's doing something low fat and closer to South Beach than Atkins . i don't think we're going to hear Oprah promoting a high fat diet like Atkins anytime soon. Honestly I just can't see it.

I also think she's done low carb in the past as well. I think Oprah's issues, as well as many of ours, go alot farther than whether or not she eats carbs and how many etc...and she has admitted this.

I hope she is successful because as P. Deuce said she is an enormous celebrity, and influences millions of women....it would be to the benefit of many.

Re: Oprah just said she is doing low carb!!

She did Atkins way back when Dr. Atkins was still alive. She had him on the show. She did it all wrong and then blamed the "diet" when she stopped and gained quickly. I still remember her dissing low carb on her show.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: Oprah just said she is doing low carb!!

Ok, here's the deal. One of the Olsen twins asked Oprah what she has for breakfast. Oprah said, "Um, you know, I'm trying the protein thing now because I'm trying to eliminate...I haven't had a bagel in so long...just hearing you say that..." The words low carb were never spoken. "Protein thing." Hmmm...

I figure she has the right to make whatever choices regarding her lifestyle as the rest of us. Based on her level of success, we will hear more down the road.

Papa sounds like an O hater!! Come on, Papa she wasn't voted a celebrity in a popularity contest. She earned her success. I remember living around Chicago (when I was in grade school) in her early days before the world knew who she was, before the show was in syndication. When I stayed home sick...I watched Oprah!! She's been an inspiration to many woman who perhaps wouldn't have been inspired any other way. I personally don't care whether she brings a good or bad rap to low carbing. I don't exactly run into supporters out there every day cheering me on. Everyone must make their own choices. BTW, Papa, most of those books she recommends do well because they're actually good books. I never see anyone at the salon saying they need the blah blah haircut Oprah recommends. She does go through phases. I DVR her show and sometimes it gets deleted before I even watch it. Depends on whether I want to take the time to relate to her show content.

Papa? Your Oprah comments made me think of Denis Leery. You've got to check out his book. HILLARIOUS!! He tried to debunk the legend that is Oprah. All of the women in his life LOVE her and he set out on a mission to prove she wasn't all that. He's now an avid Oprah supporter. His book gives details of his failed Oprah debunking mission. Truly funny!! It's ok for a woman to be on top of the world. h*ll, it took us a few thousand years to get to the top!!

i really dont have a strong opinion on this either. gain weight, lose weight. drink coffee, don't drink coffee. eat carbs, avoid carbs. while oprah has the ability to persuade the masses.....the masses have little to do with personal decisions that i make. if she goes on atkins and loses weight, good for her. if she doesnt follow atkins as strictly as she should and gains wieght, too bad for her......but this won't affect me

Adena - amen to that! You are right and also, Oprah has been very honest that she has had a struggle with dieting and that just makes her audience even more supportive of her - that's not going to discourage anyone. I am the same way with yo yo stuff and I am finding finally a successful way of life - I wish Oprah the best but if she doesn't stay on it it's not going to deter me. Oprah is successful because of SO many things and I find it insulting that many men like to dismiss her as being 'way too powerful' and demeaning her fans as 'followers'! What's really going on there?

I have an avocado, ... and it is breakfast time..

Actually though the avocado is going to go with my hamburger patty at lunch!

Plenty of Hollywood types are 'in the know' about low carb. PD, you are a great guy and I feel your concern, but no one can 'make,' 'save,' or 'ruin' another person. The exposure puts low carb back in the mainstream.. now as long as it doesn't drive up the price of eggs again I am great with it!

Re: Oprah just said she is doing low carb!!

I'd say this is a non-story. I've never been knocked out of ketosis by what Oprah ate. I've never gained a pound from her diet. I didn't lose weight or get healthier when she ran her marathon either. I'm not an Oprah hater or lover. Since I don't love her, most classify me as a hater. I don't wear Wrangler jeans because Brett Favre endorses them. Celeberties can't influence anyone with a mind of their own. The only thing I can see as a downside to this is if we gain popularity for this WOE, it becomes chic to do it, and gets expensive because everyone is trying to cash in on it. Flaxseed could jump to $20/oz, pork rinds $6/bag type deal. I do remember that in the late 90's and early 2000's this WOE was more popular and our variety of store bought goods was much greater. That could be a benefit.

I saw her on her show a couple of days ago, and some guy (I missed who he was) was explaining to her, and the audience, why a breakfast of eggs and bacon is better for you than a bagel. I was shocked, because she slammed low carb in the past.

But whatever she decides to do is up to her. I just hope she doesnt start slamming it when/if her willpower subsides, because it'll give Atkins an even worse name.
