  • I joined a TOPS and

I hate it. I turned in my membership card last night and almost sorry I did.
We live in a small town and I've been having trouble making friends so that's one of the reasons I wanted to join. That and the in person support I thought would be nice. Well, counting me, there are 4 members (and 2 of those members are at goal). Last night was my 3rd week and I really wanted to get to know the members. I asked the leader how much weight she had lost. She quickly changed the subject. The other lady was talking about a treadmill and I was telling her about mine and how much fun it is and she picked up a magazine like she didn't care so I shut up The leader gets literature in the mail and she reads it to us about people that lost a lot of weight (if I wanted to read inspiration stories about people I don't know, I could come on here ) Then she was sent stretching instructions so last night we got up and did some stretching. The meeting lasted about 25 minutes. The first day I was there I had told her that I lost 40 pounds last year and she said "That's great, You'll have to tell us how you did it". I was never asked about again and had the feeling no one cared anyway.
I was just hoping for a little bit more opening up from the gals (especially considering the small group). I just discovered another tops group in the next town over. I'm going to go to that one next Tuesday and see if I like it better. Even though it's a 10 mile drive.
Does it depend on the members or is this how all Tops meetings are run?

Susan I have never been to a TOPS group myself but I have a friend who goes to one regularly here in Vermont and she loves it. She is always talking about how they share recipies, ideas, stories ect ...... I think you may have found a bad group and possibly will enjoy the one in the next town much better! Give it a try and let us know!

Re: I joined a TOPS and

I've belonged to TOPS from Stuarts Draft, VA to Key West, FL. The one I belonged to in Stuarts Draft was wonderful. We had about 20 to 30 active members. It was a lot of fun and very supportive. The one in Key West was a joke with about 7 members, all catty and very negative about any suggestion about how other TOPS clubs inspire and support the members in their weight loss journey. I went a total of three times and then never went back.

I have belonged to the one in Fishersville, VA and in Staunton, VA--they were better than Key West, but not by much. I finally just stopped going. They really had a problem when I started doing Atkins. I wasn't going to lie about it, so it was useless for me to continue to pay dues and go to meetings.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Chicklady, I believe that it stands for take pounds off sensibly. There was a local tops group a few years back in my hometown and if I remember correctly it stood for that.

              Yes, iamran, that is correct.
Thanks, Sunny. I guess it depends on the chapter. I'm looking forward to checking out the other one on Tuesday. Then I just found out there's another one just a few miles down the road from that one.. I'll keep trying. But if it doesn't work out then it wasn't meant to be.
