  • Need Help With Snacks

I'm big on snacks. When I get home from class, I'm hungry and it's too early for dinner. I get hungry between classes and need something to hold me over so I don't cave in and get a cheeseburger.

I'm a college student so preparing snacks every night is a little hard.

What are some induction friendly snacks that I can buy or some that involve very little preparation.

    Thanks in advance,

    Brad

Hello! I used to have this same issue all the time! First of all, make sure you do always have a snack on hand to cut down on the temptation to snack on illegal foods! Some things that have worked for me are red pepper sticks, celery sticks, cauliflower, a few pieces of pepperoni, deli turkey meat (or any filler free sandwich meat) rolled up with a piece of cheese. I used to take the meat/cheese roll ups and microwave them until the cheese melts- yum! Later you can have nuts or berries as well- they are the perfect size to snack on! I also sometimes make a point to make extra of whatever I'm cooking so that I can snack on leftovers later (I love picking at cold leftovers straight from the fridge...weird, I know!). Also when I can find good ones I snack on pickles like there is no tomorrow! Good luck! And let us know what snacks you come up with that work best for you! It is always good to hear about what other people are doing!

That was a bad habit I had to break when I started Atkins! I love cold meat, especially chicken. I love cold veggies, especially green beans! If I start snacking indiscriminately from the fridge, I would be eating until midnight again. Now, I put everything away and don't open the fridge after 7:00 p.m.

Glad that you can do it without over-indulging. I've given up on thinking I could do it without going nuts.

You have a cheese allowance of 3 to 4 ounces a day. String cheese is a good option--easy to take with you. Pepperoni goes good with cheese as long as you don't eat too much at one time. Celery with cream cheese is great, too. With veggies, you should always eat something fatty with it.

Meat and cheese roll-ups are another great snack. I used to buy a pound of deli turkey or ham and get a half of a pound of Swiss or Provolone cheese sliced thin and make up a bunch of roll-ups. Then I froze them in sandwich baggies, so I could just grab a package and go. I kept packets of mayo to dip them in, because you can't freeze mayo.

One of my favorites is to wrap a slice of ham spread with mustard around a Mt. Olive sugar free (Splenda sweetened) gerkin pickle! Yum yum!

You can bake up a bunch of chicken breasts so you will have some cut up in chunks for a snack attach. I like to mix dijon mustard and mayo to dunk my chicken chunks in.

Pork rinds make a great crunchy snack. I use pork rinds to dip into salsa and sour cream when I want something spicy. Pace chunky Salsa is induction friendly in small amounts. I also use the flat ones as a cracker for other spreads.

Boiled or deviled eggs are the all-time best Atkins friendly snack. They are very portable and very filling. Boil up a bunch at one time.

          Sunny!

To answer your pickle question, you can have any that don't contain sugar. Even some sour dill pickles have sugar, so check out the ingredients. Mt. Olive makes some great bread and butter, gerkins and sweet relish, all sweetened with Splenda. You just have to count them as you would cucumbers and remember to count the Splenda sweetened ones in your artificial sweetener allowance.

Take a paper plate and put pinches (or small cubes) of cheese all over it (space them, b/c they spread)... and microwave until they start to turn a little brown. Take them out and let cool, and you have "cheese chips"! Great plain or with salsa or other dip.

I could as well but I have a hard time finding sour dill pickles here. So many of them have sugar in them or are somehow sweet! To find good pickles I usually go to a Polish food store but I don't read Polish so that is hit or miss as well!

Sunny- I used to have the bad habit of picking at left overs all night as well. Now I still let myself snack on leftovers but what I do is pull a set amount out and put it on a plate or in a bowl or something and then tell myself that that is absolutely all I can have of it. It works for me and I still get my cold meat fix!

                  Re: Need Help With Snacks

I feel for you. My son is trying to Atkins at Univeristy too. Are you in a dorm or an apartment? That makes a difference.

Dorm room- salami, cheese, a handful of nuts (once you get to nut rung), celery with cream cheese or, later, peanut butter, pork rinds. Order in buffalo wings if need ne, just find a place that doesn't bread them first.

If you have a kitchen, make a big batch of your own buffalo wings or whatever on the weekends and save them for mid week snacking.A pot of chili without beans is a good thing to keep on hand. Boiled or deviled eggs are great too. Egg or tuna salad you can buy or make yourself and eat it plain or on lettuce. For a sweet, cream cheese whipped with a little Splenda and a dash of vanilla is good. So are Jello instant sugar free puddings made with cream and water instead of milk. Better to stay away from that stuff but if you need a treat this is a reasonable alternative to binging. I know college life means everybody snacks at night. Hang in there. It will be worth it. Also don't underestimate the need to exercise. Best of luck.

As a former UK Wildcat and Lexingtonian I feel I have to help out here.

If you're in a dorm and have a small fridge, I'd recommend cut-up veggies like celery, cucumber, etc. And Kroger has some excellent Dill Dip that's very snack friendly (you'll find it in the deli section with the good cheese!)

Others have mentioned deli roll-ups and boiled/deviled eggs, and those are *always* a faithful standby snack! String cheese (in moderation), tuna salad in lettuce cups, or I microwave some bacon.

                    hope that helps!

                      Re: Need Help With Snacks

I bought some cheap plastic bowls with lids. Have almost a dozen of them now and I always try to have a least one filled with snacks at work. I slice up cucumbers and then cut those slices in half. Then I cut up celery sticks into slightly longer than bite size pieces. I put those in one bowl. I put ranch dressing as dip in another bowl. It travels well with a lid. Then you get your veggies and some fat. I also take string cheese...mozzarella and pepperoni slices. BUT, be careful with pepperoni slices. They're high fat, not super filling and processed. They're really good though especially with the string cheese. It'll get you through. Pork rinds work too but they're not filling to me at all. However, they're very portable. They are the ONLY thing I can eat in the vending machine at work so I take my own snack every day. Eating that fatty ranch dressing with your veggies really does fill you up. I don't think you'll be disappointed! Let us know what works for you!
