    What is a patty ?

    Hi ,

    I see lots of posts which mention "patties"

    The only time I have heard this word used in the UK is when my kids are watching Spongebob Squarepants on the TV , when he makes crabby patties in the Krusty Krab , but these look like beefburgers to my untrained eye .

    The term "patty" doesn't seem to have migrated to the UK yet.Could somebody please explain what a "patty" is .

      The only patty that I know of is like you said a hamburger patty. Its just ground beef that is formed into the shape of a patty and fried in a skillet or grilled and then u would eat it like that or preceed to make a hamburger out of it. We also have peppermint patties which are candy and they too are round in shape.

          Hi Blubberman, you nailed it on the head. Hamburger patties are squished, smashed, and "patted" together to make beef burgers. American slang i guess, but that is what i have heard them called my entire life. One more thing, it could be any thing you "pat" together with your hands.

              Maybe you recognize it better in this form.

              "Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man" is a traditional English nursery rhyme.

              Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man.
              Bake me a cake as fast as you can.
              Pat it and roll it and mark it with "B"
              And put it in the oven for Baby and me.

              Which got turned into:

              Patty cake patty cake, baker’s man
              Bake me a cake as fast as you can
              Roll the dough mark it with B
              And throw it in the oven for baby and me
              Basicly, anything that is shaped by holding it in your hands and patting it. So hey are called pattys. This normally applies to meat. I do not think I have heard of it in regards to any other types of food, except in the rhyme.

                                      I agree , Spongebob rocks ! Almost as good as Thomas the Tank Engine ..

                                      I went over to Montana a few years ago , saw that Thomas was on TV . I was so suprised to hear it had been redubbed with American voices . It just didn't seem the same as the UK version .

                                      But at least Scooby Doo is the same in both Countries .
