  • Ketosis and not losing???

    Hi Everyone,

I'm horribly depressed. I am on my ninth day of Induction and haven't lost anything. How could this be??? I am trying so hard; however, it should be known that I am an emotional eater. I have been stuffing my face with all the induction foods and my body says it is in Ketosis but yet, no weight loss. Am I doing something wrong? Is it possible to eat too much on this diet? I know about the whole don't gorge thing, but I just think I should still be losing despite emotional binges on induction approved foods at times. I feel I can't restrict myself any further on induction, even if I am using sweetners, cream, and drinking diet drinks. I'm holding on as best as I can. Advice??? Will these pounds come off???

    Typical eating day:

    2-3 cups of tea
    5 cups of water
    2 eggs
    1 bacon cheeseburger (no bun)
    1 diet soda
    a plate of broccoli
a piece of chicken with olive oil and spice

    Snacks/Desserts:
    olives
    swiss cheese
    cream cheese with splenda/cream
    2 sf jello with cream
    pork rinds
    pepperoni

My goal is to be thinner before I graduate in May. I'm willing to do anything to get there and I thought that Atkins would be the solution! I exercise about 4 times a week.

I'm thinking maybe the solution is more water, less sweetners/cream? I am on new prescription hormones...maybe this is the problem??? HELP.

Actually it looks pretty good, but maybe you should limit the sodium some as that would make me retain water.
Also make sure your eating enough. Plug that menu into fitday and see how many calories your eating,
Your also eating a lot of cream, cream cheese so that might be the problem also.

Take a deep breath, we're going to figure this out.

Do you typically eat all of those snacks in one day? If so, that's a lot of food to eat. Even if you're in ketosis, if you eat too many calories, you won't lose.

If you're getting the bacon cheeseburgers from a fast food restaurant, don't get the cheese. The cheap processed cheese has carbs. Also, I'm not sure the jello is legal in induction even if sugar free.

For reference, here's what I ate today.

Breakfast: 3 Eggs and 2 Sausage patties
Lunch: Mongolian BBQ Plate with Shrimp, Beef, Chicken, Bean Sprouts, Broccoli, Mushrooms, Green Peppers - Oil Only, No Sauce
Dinner: Bowl of Hamburger Meat over Romaine Lettuce w/ Bleu Cheese Dressing

I've had 3 diet sodas and far over 1/2 gallon of water.

I typically don't get hungry during the day. I am a little hungry now since I didn't eat much for dinner. Lots of times, I'd have a piece of cheese. The scale's not moving that quickly, so I'll suck it up.

It's odd not to lose much in induction, but any diet requires patience. When a friend of mine did Atkins to re-lose some weight, it took her a while to start losing. Eventually, it came off and she's down 60lbs.

Also, if you're not exercising, start.

I would cut out the tea and soda and up your water intake to at least 64 oz- or 8 glasses. Also, some of the food you are eating can be salty... pepperoni has ALOT of salt. Even binging on approved foods can cause weight gain... How much cream cheese, swiss cheese, and olives are you eating? It also doesn't look like you have a lot of veggies in there... I hope this helps.

First of all, don't be depressed. You are doing something wonderful for yourself. Give yourself a pat on the back. Bad news is that what you are doing doesn't seem to be working. I can see a few obvious faults in your posted menu.

          1. Waaaay short on water. You should get at least 64 oz, but more is better. I usually try for a gallon.
          2. Is your tea decaffinated? Caffeine can cause problems with some people. You might be one.
          3. Diet soda? Toss it during induction. If it is sweetened with aspartame it can really mess you up.

Exactly how does your body say it's in ketosis? Are you using sticks? I have been getting false positives on them for about a week. A better indicator is keto breath and stinky pee. It also saves you money on sticks. Weight loss is also another indicator of ketosis.

Have you taken measurements? Success isn't only found on the scale, inches lost is also a good measure of success. If you made your goal weight and looked the same, would you call that a success, or is your true measure of success how you look and fit into your clothes?

Have you recorded on Fitday.com your actual food intake for the day and seen how many carbs and calories you are eating? While we don't count calories here, it is still necessary to eat enough to keep yourself out of starvation.

That's about all I can come up with for now, stick with it. You might just be resistant, and that's also covered in the book.

            Re: Ketosis/ Not Losing???

What does a "plate of broccoli" mean? You are allowed a cup (measured raw) if you have only 2 cups of salad veggies. Where are your salad veggies?

            1. You are limited to 3 servings of artificial sweetener a day and aspartame is not allowed. Sugar free Jell-O is made with aspartame. A diet drink has one and a half servings. Your desserts have many servings

            2. You are only allowed to eat 3 to 4 ounces of aged cheeses a day. This includes cream cheese. How much are you eating?

            3. Cream is very high in calories and has carbs. You are allowed to have 2 to 3 tablespoons a day. Cream and cheese are noted for causing slow losses

It is entirely possible that you are eating too much to lose weight. Dr. Atkins explains in great detail that you don't need to count calories, but calories do count. There is an advantage to eating low carb, whereby you can eat more than you could on low fat/low calorie, but you still can't gorge and expect to lose. This has never been an all-you-can-eat diet.

Ketosis is no guarantee of weight loss. You could be showing ketosis because you are dehydrated. You are not drinking near enough water. Even in ketosis, if you eat too much food, especially the wrong kinds, you will not lose.

Pepperoni has sugar and a lot of salt. Pork rinds also have a lot of salt. These kinds of processed foods could cause you to hold on to water weight. Especially since you are not drinking enough water to wash some of those salts out of your body.

You are not that far off track. Just clean up your diet a little and eat your veggies, obey the rules of sweeteners, cheese and cream, etc., and drink a lot of water.

Exercise is very important. Besides burning calories, exercise is a great stress reducer.

The most important thing is to try to get your emotions under control. Your stress and depression will hinder your losses. Relax a little and try to eat healthier foods. Stress is fueling your eating binges.

Echo SunnySmile, a wise and long standing ADBB member/great resource.

One of the main points of this diet is to break your bad habits (bingeing, even if it is legal - as Jimmy48 says - "Just because it's legal doesn't mean you can have 3 helpings of it"). I find the only way my body will not hold on to weight is the following:

              1. Drink 64 + ounces of water daily - this does not include diet soda, tea, cream, etc.
              2. Eat a salad with induction friendly veggies and a good dressing.
              3. Eating a wholesome dinner.
              4. Snack smart - forget all the crud with nitrates, sugar, and anything that has to be cured and has more than 10 vowels in the same word. Snack on some cheese, or some celery.
              5. I had absolutely NO losses with SF Jello, diet soda's, too much sweetener, and allowing myself to binge. LEARN WHEN YOU'RE HUNGRY AND WHEN YOUR EMOTIONS ARE TAKING OVER!!!

The weight will fall off! This diet is a great resource. I find hitting the pavement for a walk hushes that fat girl inside of me that wants to eat when the going gets tough
