  • Whey Protein Shakes

Hello everyone! I've decided to treat myself to several months of personal training, to try and go that extra toning step before I go off to florida this april... I'm pretty psyched! Anyhoo, I started today (he's a nut for core exercises and if I have to do one more plank exercise today I'm gonna bawl) and my trainer wants me to start taking whey protein shakes (well 1) after our workouts. I'm in maintenance stage and and can certainly have these, but I am looking for any possible suggestions. I'm looking for low carb as well as mildly tasty (i'm aware they aren't gonna be uber yummy, but I am bad with textures). Anyone who has ever tried these would be a big help.

    Thanks!!

They are yummy. I am addicted. I mix mine with some decaf ice cubes, cream, cocoa powder, mix it in the blender and I am close to heaven. You can use fruits. Whey is pretty versatile stuff. I just use the generic walmart brand - sweetened with splenda. There are loads out there

        Re: Whey Protein Shakes

I am training with a personal trainer as well and have been using protein drinks. I bought some protein powder from GNC (overpriced, I know), but the great thing about them is that if you don't like it, you can return/exchange it within 30 days. So, I returned two flavors I tried and was able to pick out a different brand.

Right now GNC is having a sale, and if you get their Gold Card, you save even more money, so their prices are a bit more competitive that way. But I just love their return policy and sometimes you can luck out and get a sales person who really knows their stuff.

So I would suggest finding a store (Trader Joe's, GNC, etc), that will let you try it and return/exchange it if you don't like it.

Another suggestion is buying some sugar free syrups to mix in, and like liv said, adding various things can really make them tasty. It really depends what you like. Lots of choices of fruits, syrups, other ingredients you can add to make them taste better.

This is a great site (Vitalady.com - Protein Supplements, Vitamins & Minerals, and Safe Snacks!) that has some protein powder and sugar free syrups. I really liked the Champion Nutrition protein powder and never added anything to it because it was tasty enough to drink on it's own.

I'm partial to Dymatize Elite Orange Dreamsicle flavor. Taste similar to the ice cream bars, so you definitely don't have to choke it down. It only has 2 grams of carbs, and the taste is really good. You can find this for a pretty reasonable price also.

i really wish I remembered exactly which brand I use - but it's at home and i'm at work.

I WAS going to suggest, however, to add some L-Glutamine to the mix. I've only just started taking the protein shakes during atkins (used to drink them last year during working out) - and thanks to a thread on L-Glutamine from BioGeek, I decided to add L-Glutamine to help with muscle repair after workouts.

I don't know yet if it's working - as I only just bought it on sunday, but I've used it twice now (sunday's and tuesday's workouts) and from what I hear, it's a FABULOUS supplement when working out.

              Re: Whey Protein Shakes

I get the plain unflavored unsweetened whey protein. THey have it "bulk" at the grocery store that I shop in. I then add ingredients to taste. Mostly I add Splenda, vanilla, peanutbutter...... then blend it all with some almond breeze (almond milk). THey are quite tastey. always add fats to your protein shake so your body does not convert the protein to glucose easily. THis is a mistake that a lot of people make. Good luck!

dumb question here but whats the point of whey protein? Don't we eat enough protein? What's the corelation with the powder after workouts?

Chicklady, I think there may be a higher concentration of certain amino acids in whey protein that are used by the body to repair muscle tissue after weight work.

I see. Does lugging your own excess baggage around count as "weight work"?
I've seen reci[es that called for whey protein powder of some sort, but have been hesitant to add more protein.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm gonna try mixing up some fruits like suggested. Ended up getting syntrax nectar whey protein isolate in crystal sky (0 carbs). (kinda punchy tasting) a bit sweet for my taste but doable. At least it kills any possible cravings I might have for anything juice related-- i think the random grittiness does that... yuck... Anyway, just got back from my "evil" trainer and am dipping myself in the hot tub so there's a slight chance I can move later.... Oh the things we do for bikinis... hahaha Thanks again!
