  • prednisone and weight gain???

    hello family

    i have a ?
let me start by revealing that i am a registered nurse, so i am pretty familiar with medications (although i am still not a scholar on ALL meds).....however, i am not sure how one would jive with atkins woe and weight gain while on prednisone.

my doc put me on prednisone a few weeks ago for some joint pains i was having. i was weaned off after one week by the docs. sure enough, after about a week of it being out of my system...my symptoms started creeping up again. my doc prescribed prednisone again and said that we will do a MUCH slower weaning process this time and see what happens.

now...thing is, everyone that i know who has taken prednisone for any length of time gains weight. some, a small amount, and some, a large amount.

is there anyone out there who either takes prednisone or knows someone who does and if so what has the effect been weight wise if any?

im getting a little concerned because it looks like i may be on prednisone for a couple months or so...maybe more, depending on my joint health. and it would royally suck to be trying so hard to walk the straight and narrow atkins wise and STILL blow up.

I found a lot of information I think you'd love to read. Go to the old standby...Google. Type in "prednisone low carbing" and voila. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how much info is out there. It apparently, will take a little extra work on your part, but it looks possible!! That's good news! Good luck!

I have to say that I never had a problem with prednisone.
I am highly allergic to poison ivy and I am on it every year sometimes twice for 2-3 weeks at a time. Yet, my daughter swells. So we are all different. You never know till you go through it. Good luck my dear.

        Re: prednisone and weight gain???

Unfortunately I was on it for about a year and gained a ton...granted, I wasn't allowed to exercise (long story...) , and I didn't eat well enough to stave off the weight gain, but I can attribute about 50 of the 90 I gained to being on that drug.

On the up side, it IS a miracle drug that really works wonders for people. If I knew then what I know I can go find out now, I don't think i would have gained as much.

          Re: prednisone and weight gain???

heres a little something i read.
i was able to find several sources of info on this topic.
the good part is that there is a chance of me still losing weight, especially since i am on such a low dose and it will be tapering down.
the bad news it, i WILL have to put forth a little more effort than the average atkineer.

          take a peek:

Prednisone makes low carb weight loss very tough because it
pushes your blood sugar (and hence insulin) way up without
reference to what you are eating. This defeats the whole
rationale behind low carbing which is to control insulin and
          hence fat storage.

You'll have to watch your calories very closely to avoid
weight gain, though low carbing should keep you from the
monumental gains that people on predisone often experience.

          Best of luck!
