and by poison - i'm talking HFCS. high fructose corn syrup.

i have a cold today. and when i'm sick - i've ALWAYS taken nyquil at night to help me sleep. well - i took the two tablespoons it directs you too and then just out of curiosity, not really thinkin' too much being that it's a cough syrup - i looked at the ingredients (had to peel back the label) - and yup - right there - in freakin' NYQUIL. high fructose corn syrup. UGH!!!!!

no wonder i'm out of ketosis right now. danmit!!!!!

and i've been doing soooooo good too.
oh well - just another lesson learned

HFCS is the devil ! It is in soooo many things that it shouldn't be in - it's just crap that gets added to everything especially since the low-fat craze.

I was sick recently and also used NyQuil. Fortunately, it didn't knock me out of ketosis. I just looked it up and 2 Tbsp of NyQuil have 96 calories, 19 total carbs, and 13 g sugar. Yikes !

Don't beat yourself up over it, Keriann. When we are sick, we can afford a little comfort to tide us over. Just get back on track as soon as possible and get well soon.

Thanks I guess you could say I'm back on track (not realizing how much I'd fallen off...lol) because I will NOT be taking that anymore.

I will admit it TOTALLY helped me sleep last night (which I have trouble sleeping, sick or not) - but I think i'll just stick to my night time aid in pill form instead.

Re: dangit, that poison is in EVERYTHING

If each and every one of us would raise Cain until they stopped putting poison in our food and medicines, they would have to stop. If the government would enforce truth in labeling, they would have to stop hiding sugar and MSG under different names.

If you just go by the front of the label on "Sugar Free" Cool Whip, you will never notice that it is sweetened with corn syrup, which is liquid sugar. It has more calories, carbs and sugars than the original Cool Whip.

We recently had an article in the paper where nutritionists were teaching our school kids how to read labels and avoid unhealthy ingredients like HFCS and MSG. They went on to tell of the healthy substitutions for sugar and told the kids to look for "evaporated cane juice" instead of sugar on the label! Evaporated cane juice is the process by which they manufacture plain old table sugar! They are one and the same! I assume these people have a degree in food science, but they completely dropped the ball on that one.

I hate it so bad when they try to deceive me with the naming of ingredients, that I refuse to ever eat again any product that the liars sell.

I even object to front of the label promoting something as "now fat free" or "now sugar free" when it always has been fat free or sugar free. DelMonte started putting that "now fat free" on the front label of their canned fruits! When did canned fruit ever have any more fat than nature puts into it (all fruit and veggies have a tiny bit of natural fat)? I have a blacklist a mile long.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

                    YEAH! :P

actually - truth be told - when i was doing low fat diets - i used to look for HFCS when i could - but NEVER in a MILLION years did i honestly think to look on my cold medicine.

in fact, I never (obviously) cared about carbs and in turn really didn't care about the AMOUNT of sugar IN the food or product - as long as it didn't have HFCS...it's seriously been an eye opener being on atkins finding out how much sugar really IS in everything - especially foods marketed as "no-sugar-added"

it's sickening and sad - but it seems to be the same old story. I know one of my fave snack foods (when i was 'low fat') was the Cottage Cheese doublers - which, on weight watchers is ONLY 3 points and a lot of protein, being cottage cheese - but the "fruit" that comes with it has HFCS in it, and i haven't had one since realizing that!! (plus, won't have one now on atkins anyways).

a few years ago, when I actually worked at an ice cream parlor, part time, I would usually only add in the banana when i opted for fruit because all the other fruits there were pretty much a bucket full of sugar! at least the banana was as "natural" as you could get!

but yeah - it's absolutely DISGUSTING how much stuff out there that this poison is in.

Oh, yeah! Those people teaching the kids how to eat more healthy suggested to lower sugar intake, low or no-fat yogurt with fruit was a better option than cereal for breakfast! There's about 30 grams of sugar in a small serving of low fat yogurt with fruit on the bottom.

... every morning there is Dannon Fruit Blend Low-fat Yogurt. Unfortunately, Dannon Fruit Blend Low-fat yogurt is the perfect example of how "low fat" does NOT mean low calories, and in this case, it also means there's plenty of sugars to make up for the missing fat. It is low fat with only 1.5 grams of total fat and 1.0 grams of saturated fat, but there 170 calories and 30 grams of sugar in one 6 ounce container - that's like 71/2 teaspoons of sugars per serving. There is some goodness in this yogurt too, with 6 grams of protein, 20% calcium and phosphorous and 15% vitamin B12.
                      Here's the breakdown for:
**********3/4 cup Cap'n Crunch breakfast cereal: 120 cal., 26 grams carbs, 13 grams sugars
Breyers Yogurt, low fat peach, fruit on the bottom: 240 cal., 46 grams carbs, 40 grams sugar
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Makes me wonder how something as wretched-tasting as Nyquil can have HFCS in it. That stuff tastes awful! The capsules have glycerin in them, but at least there's no HFCS.
