  • Low carb/Yeast free/no sugar diet

I have been following the Atkins program for 1 week (2nd time). I have about 30 pounds to lose. Even if I never lose a pound-which I have lost 4 so far- I would continue to eat a low carb diet bc I feel so GREAT.

I went for an acupuncture treatment today, and was speaking with my doctor. I asked him about yeast, mercury dental fillings, lower abdomen bloat (all mentioned as sympotms/problems of Candida in Dr. Atkins New Diet Rev. book). He did a test and said ¨yes you have glucose imbalance, problems with glucose and yeast.¨ ¨

He told me stay away form carbohydrates ( I did not tell him I had started the Atkins program). He suggusted I eat vegetables and a not to much animal protein. He himself eats a mostly vegetarian diet with fish. I do not eat red meat (bc I do not enjoy the taste).

Anyway---I have been Atkins-- but to try and eat this low carb, yeast free, dairy free, sugar free diet seems so overwhelming. I have been eating low car, sugar free obviously (Induction), but I have been eating dairy. I know the low carb, yeast free, dairy free sugar free way of living can be done. Many of the members have and currently eating this way.

I just need some ideas, some advice, some positive comments how this works out in life. Eating is so soical: restaurants, snacks at someones home, parties. My nephew has allergies to milk, he watches what he eats very carefully (his life depends on it!) by the way --he is 7!! If he can do it, so can I!

Hi Mateluna First, congrats on your loss so far!
I'm not in the same position you are, but I'd like to suggest checking out the "atkins for Health" section where you'd be likely to find more folk with similar issues.
I don't eat much dairy myself...more of a watching the calories and taste/mood thing, but one of the biggest issues is getting enough calcium without dairy. On days i don't eat dairy, or fish with bone, like canned salmon, I add calcium carbonate to my cooking.
    Good luck!

I've gone on the strictest yeast-free diet, twice now, and I feel so much better it was well worth it. Unless you have a really severe case, it doesn't have to be forever. I did it 14 days each time and it worked. I had to do it again when I had back-to-back surgeries last year with a lot of antibiotics.

The first time I tried just going by what Dr. Atkins says to avoid in the book, I was not much better after a month. Then, I read The Yeast Connection which says you have to give up all fermented products, such as vinegar, soy sauce and all condiments that contain them (mayo, mustard, bottled salad dressings), mushrooms, cheese and all dairy, grains, fruit, nuts, but also all dried herbs and spices, all coffee and teas, including herb teas or anything that is powdered. All contain molds that feed yeast.

All I could eat was fresh, whole foods for the two weeks. I was really whiny about my bottled Caesar salad dressing and was leery of making homemade using fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice, but since then, I have never bought bottled dressing again.

I also used coconut oil because of it's anti-fungal properties. Yeast starts in the mouth, so I brushed my teeth three times a day with baking soda, which is also highly anti-fungal.

I got rid of my symptoms in record time and even some skin things cleared up that I didn't know were caused by yeast overgrowth. I had been using prescription medications for the skin problems for over a year and it was no better until I got rid of the yeast.

I did have to slowly add back in foods, but I can eat some things now, like cheese, without having it bother my stomach.

We have a yeast forum here at ADBB where you can get a lot of information: Candida (Yeast) - Atkins Diet
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.
