  • Great boost for first timers!

    Hi,

My fiance and I are losing weight for our summer wedding, as we have got into a comfort zone these past few years and ate what we want, with our weight ballooning!

Anyway, I decided to go on the Atkins a week into January as I'd had success before, and don't like feeling like I'm starving myself. Jenny decided to go onto a lower carb diet, but within a week had switched over to Atkins when she noticed all the nice food I got to eat (and the portions!).

So, just six weeks later, Jen has lost 28lbs and is now wearing clothes that have not fit her in three years. I've lost 25lbs and am also wearing my old clothes again.

It's not just the weight loss which has been so remarkable though, (as I've known from the past how effective Atkins is) it's the fact that we both bounce out of bed of a morning, don't get that afternoon drowsiness and are both much more alert. Our skin is healther (the water does that) and our teeth seem to just 'feel' cleaner even before brushing, as we're not having any sugar whatsoever.

Exercise has fitted around our existing regimes. We have a dog that needs a daily walk, but that has now turned into a daily jog, which is only about a mile a day, but the intensity has picked up and we're upping the distance now too. Jen also goes to a Body Combat class which is toning up all the bits of loose skin.

Importantly, we've also saved an absolute fortune!! Our weekly shop cost has stayed pretty much the same, but now the costs of our few bottles of wine mid-week, our TV watching treats (crisps, chocolate, wine gums!) have been replaced by a few almonds or most recently fresh berries which are cheaper and we eat them less frequently. The saved money is going to be spent as a treat on some new clothes this weekend!

The reason for our success lies completely in variety. If you are going to do this diet lazily and just eat bacon and eggs with every meal, then you will get bored and fail (if not ill). We have something different each night for dinner, and vary our breakfasts to now include some fruit, with a fresh salad for lunch. We are now in a routine with this diet that it is no longer a diet....it's just the way we eat. We've gone out for a few meals and stayed on course, and we don't deprive ourselves of enjoyment, especially now that we're making some amazing desserts! (thanks for the recipes!).

My reason for writing this here is this: If a make a mistake or eat badly over the next few months, I can come back on this board and remind myself how effective and healthy this diet is. I'm also writing this to try to get across to new people on the diet that it's NOT a quick fix. If you start eating stacks of spuds and bread again, you WILL put the weight back on. This is NOT a bland meat based diet, it's a healthy and rich way of eating that in which you will get out as much as you put in. Fail to prepare and prepare to fail!!

Anyways, thanks to the many board members whose advice and ideas I read through on a daily basis.

Wonderful to hear about your success. For some people variety is going to be the key. I agree.
