  • Are Breyer's ice cream bars safe?

    Hi,

I tend to hold out a Breyer "low carb ice cream bar" for a treat, if I've been good all day.

    Today, for instance, I had:

    1/2 cheddar omellette
    Grilled Chicken Salad on Salad.
A bit steak. (not too much)
    Lots of Water.
    3/4 of a Myoplex low-carb bar (net carbs 4).
    And a Breyer's bar (net carbs 5).
    Coffee

Each of the latter two have lots of sugar alcohols.

    Does this work?

What phase are you in? I see too little real food and too much processed junk. It would be better to have a lot of steak with some veggies and less snack stuff. Was the "little bit of steak" your dinner?

I see a problem with rewarding yourself with dessert/sweets if you "have been good all day." Try not to think of eating food as good or bad. You are learning a new, adult way of eating for health and vitality. That old "if I'm good I'll get a cookie; if I'm bad I'll get sent to bed with no dinner" is so kindergarten.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

The little bit of steak WAS my dinner. I neglected to put in the steamed Broccoli that I had with it. I also had a salad at lunch. The Myoplex bar was a 3pm thing which is out of the ordinary for me. I was just caught w/o food and I carry them. That's why dinner was small. I don't like the bars 'cuz I don't trust them. But I do like something in the evening. It stops me from bad snacking. It seems to be working. I've been stalled off and on for a long time. Am currently trying to get moving downward again.

      Thanks for any advice.

Since you are male and 6' tall, I still think you need more food in general. If you had some butter on that broccoli, that would help. I think your three main meals need to be larger. More protein and more fat. Of course, you didn't say how many eggs were in that half of an omelet. If you are not eating enough, your body will hold on to every calorie.

Are you exercising? If you are, try changing up your exercise every three weeks.

Re: Are Breyer's ice cream bars safe?

The omellett was a pretty large one from a local coffee shop. I wasn't trying not to finish it...just ran out of hunger. The chicken salad (whcih is just grilled chicken, mayo, and celery) was a healthy sized serving. I can try some more food - it's a good suggestion.

My exercising is.....sporadic at best. Usually treadmill for 35 mins. I'd love to say 4x per week. But 2 is more like it.

i am going to say no- they are not safe. besides the fact they are chock full of fake stuff- i doubt they are safe- and you can probably tell by the fact your scale is not moving- same with the myoplex bars.
someone once told me "you only get out of this program- what you put into it" and i took it to heart.
you need to figure out better alternatives.
i know if i am craving a sweet- first i try to talk myself out of it- but i have eaten a bowl of the allowed amount of whip cream that has been sweetened. It does the job in my case- but the whole idea of this program is to break bad habits with food- and giving yourself a reward is a bad habit.-

Re: Are Breyer's ice cream bars safe?

I would suggest looking at the ingredients of any bars or ice cream to see what it is made from before deciding if you want to include them in your menus.

Are the myoplex bars especially labelled lowcarb? I looked online and even the 'diet bars look like they contain glucose

I agree with Sunnysmile for your size it seems to me your meals are very small and that if you ate larger ones you might not feel the need for snacks - especially the sugar alcohol filled processed ones
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Thanks all. The Myoplex are really rare for me. I probably shouldn't have even included it becuase it isn't much of a discussion point for me personally. Usually I carry walnuts and a cheese stick in my briefcase.

The Breyers bars don't look terrible to me. I have always believed that sugar alcohols can't possibly count for zero. It just doesn't make sense. I do believe they can count "low" however.

If you have zero digestive distress (gas, cramps, diarrhea), you might be absorbing and metabolizing every gram of carbs. I also think you can adapt over time to metabolize even more or all of the sugar alcohols.

Re: Are Breyer's ice cream bars safe?

I'll join the chorus... Atkins definitely will work better for you without the bars. Try to eat veggies, fats and proteins in the right amounts, to satisfy your hunger, no more no less. Seems like precious little food that you're having, to me.

One of the great things about this way of eating is that you can indulge in many delicious foods... and no need to feel guilty. It's surprisingly easy to "be good".... and the "being good" is a reward in itself.

Sorry... I'll get off the soapbox now!

Re: Are Breyer's ice cream bars safe?

                        Safe, like in the dictionary?
                        -- free from danger or the risk of harm;
No, they are not. Low carb junk food (be it Atkins, Breyer's, South Beach, etc.) is known to stall people. Of course, just because driving drunk is not safe it doesn't mean people will stop doing it. Some get hurt, some don't... and as long as it doesn't happen to you, you'll keep doing it. Same with the bars -- if they don't stall one, he could keep eating them no matter what we write here.

As for the sugar alcohols, the American Diabetic Association recommends counting half of them as net carbs. However, this is obviously a rule of thumb. Some people digest more of those sugar alcohols, some less. Also, keep in mind that even if you do get some bathroom issues from eating them, it does not mean you are not absorbing any of those xx g of sugar; it just means some of them are not metabolized. How many? There's no way to tell.

I eat em on the weekends and still stay in ketosis. it is easier for me to be strict during the week. I do work out though especially on the days when I eat the ice cream bars... just be careful they dont cause more cravings. I do think you are eating too little also. Heck I think I eat more than you.. also restaurant omlettes probably have milk in them so be carefull

Some restaurant omelets have pancake batter in them--IHOP for one. You have to be really careful in all restaurants.

To change the subject, I quit eating omelet at restaurants when I found out that IHOP puts pancake batter in their omelets to bulk them up. Now I worry they all do.
