  • Net Carbs uk very confussed

    Hi I am on my 14 day of atkins I lost 3lb the first week and 0 this week which is disappointing. Although I have lost 2 " in total from my hips so I guess i'ts working. I have been in ketosis for the past 11 days so am happy I am doing ok, but I am getting even more confused about carbs and net carbs. I have found out that as I am in the uk I should not be taken the fibre content away from the carbs and that in uk the carbs you see are the net carbs. My only problem is now finding a uk book that has the uk net carbs in it and a good website that is for uk carbs. I have found the below link and it looks like the same net carbs i am getting when i take info from uk food packaging. Could one of you really experienced Atkins dieters please take a look and let me know if this is indeed a UK one. Also any recommended handy pocket uk carbs count books would be great pleasssse. I really don't want to give up but am spending hours trying to sort this out.

      Can't help with the UK stuff, but net carbs are easy. If a product has 13g of carbs listed on the label, and 10 of those are fiber, you subtract the fiber and get net carbs, those we need to count.
      1) If you are trying to lose 30 pounds, more or less, you are pretty much right on track with this plan. And for some reason, when the pounds are sticking, the inches seem to be disappearing....I read why a number of time, but I never understood what I was reading. LOL
      2) Post a menu, some times what new folks think is correct might be a big staller for folks,

        Hello again Ally

        The net carb counts will be the same in an American book or a UK book. The net carb is the one listed and not the carbs before fibre (as far as I have come across).

        You can look at any low carb website for net carbs and the figure will be the same - in the UK or America (as they would have already deducted fibre).

        The only thing you need to keep in mind is that when you look at a food label in the UK, the carbohydrate value listed is the net carb value and so you do not deduct fibre.

          So just to reiterate, the only difference between low carbing in America or in the UK is how to read the food labels.

            Thank you so much for your help and such a promt reply. I have taken a look at the website for carb counting through your link but this is where I get confussed as I have taken the net carbs per 100g of cauliflower from the packet and get 1.8 the website says 2.8 and brocolli is 4.04 net carbs on the website and on my packaging it says 1.8. Mushrooms on my packaging say 0.4 and the website says 2.04. I have't taken the fibre content off from the packaging just used the carbs for the count. So sorry but am really lost . This uk carb site seems to get the same carb count as i do so am lost as to which one is correct to follow. Ally

                I think there is a lot of confusion and some numbers that are not always the same.
                You have to decide what you want to go with.
                I always use the numbers from the US Nutrition database when I am in doubt - it is my last word site on everything nutrtion

                  Carb counts do vary between websites and product packaging.

                  OK, this is what I suggest. If you have the packaging then go by that carb count (like you say, do not deduct the fibre). It will be accurate for the product you are using. If you do not have the packaging then check on a website. Don't bother comparing.. just use the packaging info if you have it. That is what I do anyway. For example, on bags of salad, they will put accurate information on the exact ingredients of that product and so you know it is correct.

                  If you decide to use fitday then please PM me for advice as I don't want to confuse you now but you need to do things slightly differently on there too.

Yes I am using fitday but i am creating all my own custom foods and not putting the fibre just net carbs, protein and fat of the packaging. is this correct? below is a copy of what i have eaten today.                       If you are using fitday I would not bother adding custom entries for veggies and staples. Fitday does a good job with carbs. You just have to look at your total carb - then deduct the fibres and you have the net.

                        Yes that is exactly right. Just forget the fibre and add the carbs on the labels and that way it will be correct

                        I have added pretty much every food that I eat. Firstly for the reason you have found out that the listing on fitday, the internet etc. can be quite different from the packaging and secondly because although it takes a while at first, it is worth it in the end as everything is in there and accurate. After about a month (when adding new foods as and when you eat them), you will find that most things you eat will be listed.

                          Hi thank you all for your replies. I'm gonna stick with the food labels and put them in fitday, so hopefully this will be more accurate. Can I just check I am currenty trying for 5% carbs (12g being from salad and veg) 30% protein and 65% fat. My callorie intake is around 1500-1800 is this ok as my current weight is 172 lb and I'm 5ft 5". Also how do you get your weight etc to appear on your profile like at the bottom of yours please.
