Hi. I'd like to know if it's okay to take Sominex to sleep while doing atkins or if it has an adverse effect??? I have a difficult time with sleep and they help me to nod off. Thanks in advance for all of your kind responses.

Re: Sominex??
I've tried the Melatonin route and unfortunately it didn't helpOriginally posted by EverLosing View PostMelatonin...I have some and wish I could just hand it to you! Keep it natural if possible. Less to worry about that way. It is pretty cheap. You can get it at nearly any pharmacy or even at places like WalMart. Are you exercising a lot? That always helps wear me out.
As far as the excercising....not as much as I should

Re: Sominex??
Does Melatonin really work as a sleep aid?...I have a HORRIBLE time sleeping at night and I usually take tylenol night time sleep aids when i'm having a lot of trouble...Originally posted by EverLosing View PostMelatonin...I have some and wish I could just hand it to you! I agree that i'd rather keep things as "natural" as possible - but could you please expand more on melatonin?
as far as the original question - I don't know if it has an adverse effect but I understand your pain - sleepless nights SUCK!
hopefully someone'll have a good suggestion for you.Find my blog at: http://keriannmb.blogspot.com/

Did you know there are different doses? I can't remember what dose my ex boyfriend took but when he needed it, it was a high dose and knocked him on his a$$!Originally posted by eddiesgal View PostI've tried the Melatonin route and unfortunately it didn't help

Keriann,
I'm going to give you links....I'm not a doctor...although marrying one doesn't sound bad....

I love Bodybuilding.com - The Future Of Bodybuilding! Huge Bodybuilding Site.!! It's a great site. I try to ignore the ads and soak up the knowledge. I have some 3 mg melatonin that'll knock you out!! When I had horrible trouble with sleep, I'd fall asleep practically right after I got home from work at night. Someone suggested melatonin. Well, THAT wasn't my problem....getting to sleep. I couldn't stay awake late enough to take it at a reasonable hour!! Think I might try some again....maybe tonight isn't the night though...have to get up around 2:45 am!!

Re: Sominex??
Sominex is nothing but plain old Benadryl antihistamine. They both are diphenhydramine HCI, so all that should happen is that they dry you out. Drink extra water. You might have a hangover the next day from them.Originally posted by eddiesgal View PostHi. I had to take melatonin for a while before it helped. I take 6 mg early in the evening, not 20 minutes before bedtime like the instructions say.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: Sominex??
I have no experience with sominex so I can't comment on that, but I suffered from severe insomnia for quite some time and melatonin has CHANGED MY LIFE. Sunny is right, it is not a quick fix and takes some time to work, but it completely regulated my sleep cycle and I can't recommend it enough!

Re: Sominex??
very interesting...the webmd article says, "melatonin production is partly affected by light. During the shorter days of the winter months, melatonin production may start earlier or, more often, later. This change can lead to symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or winter depression."
i'm definitely thinking about looking into buying some - i assume these are in vitamin form, correct?
I DID finally buy a black out shade for the window that needed one badly (big light right outside) which'll hopefully help...last night i was awake for three hours before i fell asleep.
that's how most nights are - and once i DO fall asleep - i usually toss and turn like freakin' crazy. i REALLY appreciate the info here. thanks!!

Re: Sominex??
I wouldn't call my doctor about it. I believe it's in the same classification as any other supplement. Maybe it would be best for you though to try it one night when you don't have to wake up to an alarm clock the next morning. See how your body reacts, that you don't p*ss off your boss or coworkers, you know... Seriously, I picked that particular article referring to seasonal affective disorder because of your post last night! Glad you caught it!

Re: Sominex??
I take one 5 mg pill nightly. Research shows it is very safe, but if you are concerned it is certainly easy enough to get your doctor's opinion on it and if they have a recommended dosage for you. (My father's a doctor and he's the one who told me about it so I got some unsolicited advice when I complained about my sleepless nights)
Turned out for the best. I can only hope it helps you too; our symptoms sound similar!

Re: Sominex??
I used to take chamomile tea before bed. It worked wonders, and no side effects to speak of. It has kind of a funny taste, but I just mixed it with half the water and slammed it down. Re: Sominex??
well - I just wanted to post here what my doc said about melatonin and sleeping in general. Since I went to talk to her about other stuff and get my blood work done, I thought I'd ask her about this...
I told her that my sleeping patterns are completely bass-ackwards and that at night I don't sleep well but in the afternoon I could lay down on the couch and be asleep within minutes...
I asked her about the Melatonin and she said that could definitely help - but for people who have sleeping issues, they need to try and "retrain" their brain/body to a regular sleep cycle and the BEST thing to do - take a friday/saturday that you can and stay awake for 24 hours at least...meaning do your normal friday routine - but don't sleep at all friday night or saturday afternoon...then go to bed at your normal time saturday night and then after that start taking 3 - 5 mg of melatonin to help.
She said that's what she prescribes to teens who get this sleeping issue after they've messed up sleeping patterns during summer vacation, go back to school - and aren't ready to get back into a normal day (when they've been sleeping til noon most days during summer. lol)
so hey - i'll give anything a shot.
