  • Insulin Level is at 19!!!! :(

Ok - so when I was first diagnosed with Insulin Resistance / Metabolic Syndrome - the doc told me my Insulin level was at 15 (should be under 10)...well I just had my blood taken again (this is a year and a half later) and after two months of being on atkins - it's at 19!!!! that SUCKS!!

NO WONDER I've not lost the amount of weight I'd expected to by now (again, though, I'm VERY happy that I've lost 10!)

But - now I know the issue...with an insulin level at 19 - NO WONDER it's hard for me to lose weight.

Now I absolutely have it set in stone that I can NOT ever go back to any other type of diet. I mean it - there is no question about it whatsoever. I HAVE to do this for the rest of my life! (good thing I like it!)

    But dang!

I have no knowledge at all about insulin levels but didn't want to read and run. Sorry to hear the levels have increased.. do they know why? There are a few people that suffer with diabetes that I'm sure will be able to offer some good advice. Zx

I usually only tend to study the DANDR book only when a section pertains to me, so I'm not 100% sure, but maybe Dr. Atkins Fat Fast might be a good idea for you? I mean, it's specifically designed for people like you who have a VERY high resistance to losing weight to help you lose weight like others can... I'm not sure... somebody who has more experience in this will probably come along and give you the advice. But you know, just read that section over --- maybe it's the thing you need.

I dont know about insulin testing but Dr Atkins did say that tests for cholesterol levels etcwould not show an improvement till you had been on Atkins for a while
Typically, after six weeks doing Atkins, you can expect to see improvement in virtually all health indicators.
so maybe your body needs more time?

i can understand the "needing more time" - but it's been 8 weeks now...and the fact that my insulin went UP...it just scares me - BUT I also think that gives me more of a mindset as to WHY I've lost so slowly (granted, though, I've lost 10 and again, broken record, I really am VERY happy about that...just - like everyone does, expected more than that).

But if that IS the reason WHY I am / will lose a LOT more slowly than everyone else - at least it gives me a starting point as to "why"...ya know? it reallllly sucks - but this is my new goal - obviously i have a weight loss goal - but m next goal is to get that insulin down!

Ooops - I misread your post and thought you had been only 2 weeks on Atkins

Re: Insulin Level is at 19!!!!

Who knows maybe the blood levels were up before you even started on Atkins. Am I correct in reading that the initial blood work was done 1.5 yrs ago? Was it done prior to starting Atkins?

Congrats on the 10# loss thus far. Have no answers as to why. Maybe an endocrinologist could help.

              Good luck.

I love your pics! Who knew 10 lbs. would make such a difference? You look much thinner in the second pic. Congratulations!

I've often suspected that I might have Metabolic Syndrome. Do you know how this condtion is diagnosed?

Thanks, and keep up the good work!
                Have a great day!

How funny... I just read your blog this morning... I had seen you mention about the splenda and things and how you feel it may be stalling you. Did you try cutting it out for some time?

Are you Type 1 diabetes? Just curious and curious if your DR has checked for this. What "diet" or eating style has he proposed? Did you mention doing Atkins?

I really wish my insulin was at 19... mine is waaaaayyyyyyy higher then that, sadly. Its somewhere between 35 and 50, I can't remember what the doctor said, it was checked over a year ago now. I am sure my insulin is probably about 70 or so now, since I gained almost 50 pounds last year. BLAH!

I hope that you can figure out why your insulin is higher, that is really discouraging, I am sorry that its not lower for you. I am on this program mainly to lower my insulin, because as that goes down, so does the weight. Good luck!!!
