  • Need of supporting friend!

    Hello all,

My goal is to lose 35 pounds by May and I am currently starting the induction phase of the Atkins diet! I also go to the gym regularly, but will try to go every day (morning - cardio + small weights)

Let me know if you want to join me for the journey! The summer is about to START, we can do it and look and feel great!!!!

You are wanting to lose 35 pounds by May--the same May that happens in two months? Only if you need to lose over 100 pounds total. Atkins is good, but it is not magic.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

I am not sure I understand your message...Does 35 pounds seem far-fetched for 2 months time? I have quite some muscular mass (very toned legs and body in general) but lots of fat to cover it with. (E.g. my abs won't show because of this big belly)

And yes, I would like to lose 35 pounds by May, when summer starts for me! I am very hopeful I can do it! I've tried the starvation diets, orange diets, you name it! Nothing has worked..Ive decided to EAT and REGULARLY...just exercise more and no carbs! Is anyone in for the challenge?

        Re: Need of supporting friend!

35 pounds in two months is extremely far-fetched. Atkins is not a "no" carb diet--it's a low carb diet. It's not a lose weight quick crash diet. It's not really even a diet. It's a lifestyle.

You've probably already wrecked your metabolism with starvation diets and other fad diets. It takes a while to mend your metabolism. You already know that starvation and fad diets don't work. Please don't make Atkins just another fad diet to dump a bunch of weight overnight.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Well, you don't tell us how big you are or how much you need to loose overall, but if you're exercising and following Atkins (have you read the book?) you have a great shot at loosing alot of fat & blubber over the next couple of months.

I'm with you. I'm trying to get my body ready for the river season!

BTW, read the book. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about the diet and you can easily sabotage yourself by making some simple mistakes.

          Good luck!

            Re: Need of supporting friend!

You are very right SunnySmile, 35 pounds may be far fetched! I should be aiming at losing less realistically, but if the mind can conceive it, the body can achieve it. However, simply by reducing my caloric intake over the last 5 days (eating better) and exercising daily, I have lost 3 pounds! My body gets back into shape very fast. I have been reading a lot about Atkins and have decided to give it a try as of tomorrow..and seriously.

I am a law student and over this year, I have had less and less time to exercise..prioritizing my studies instead of my workouts. I have now made a workout schedule I will try to stick to, and will hopefully be able to hit the gym in the mornings before class...This way, I will have no excuse for being too tired to workout!

PolarBearKing, thanks for the insight! Summer is right around the corner indeed I am 5'2" and currently weigh 141.6 pounds. I have always been on sports teams and trained a lot, hence my muscular mass..but have gained a lot of weight over the past 2 yrs and have a big belly, large arms and big thighs. I would like to weigh 105 ideally, in 2 months, if not, in 3 months. What is your goal by this summer?

            Thank you for the support

First of all welcome tinyshorty! While 35 lbs in two months while following this WOE properly is a a bit overambitious when looking at the total amount of weight you have to lose, you can certainly make leaps and bounds in that amount of time, especially if you incorporate a good exercise plan along with it. (Get moving and the pounds melt off SOOOO much quicker) I suggest taking measurements and watching those inches go away; it feels great!! Maybe try making smaller short term goals, it's nice to hit them and then there's more mini celabrations rather than a big let down when you don't hit that big number in such a short period of time. There are great people on here for adivce and encouragement who will be just as happy for you as you are when you meet your goals, whenever that may be! Sending you lots of luck! Hopefully you will get started tomorrow as planned!!

My initial goal is 75 lbs. Over all goal is 100 lbs, which may be overly optomistic, but we'll see how I look and feel as I go along. My short term goal is 45 lbs for my 45th birthday which is mid May. I started the day after the Superbowl (2/2/09) and have already lost 16 lbs.

I did this once before about 10 yrs ago and lost weight keeping it off for a couple years but a bad motorcycle accident following my divorce (double whammy) had me steadily gaining weight.

I have a boat and go to the river (Havasu) often during the summer months, so that is what I meant when I referred to my "River Body. Anything will be better then what I'm dragging around now.

Lastly, I want you to know that you're gonna go thru a phase of carb withdrawal initially. You're gonna feel lousey a couple of days into your diet (I prefer the term "program"). Stick with it, it will pass and you will feel better.

Good luck, welcome to the forum and keep us posted.

                  Re: Need of supporting friend!

Toga Girl, I wanted to start off by saying YOU LOOK GREAT! Very gorgeous and fit. Congratulations for the weight loss, it is truly a great source of inspiration. Also, thanks for the valuable advice. It may be better to try to hit smaller goals at certain time intervals rather than one big number and then get disappointed...I am proud to say that I am officially starting today! As I am writing this, I am getting ready to hit the gym! All 139.6 pounds of me. Thank you for the encouragement and support.

PolarbearKing, I understand the weigh gain very much...as life happens sometimes Whether it be an unfortunate event, or being back at school, having a new job, etc...our emotional state can easily affect our weight gain. And it shouldn't. Congratulations for having the willpower to continue and get your body in shape for River Season I am sure you will make it and flaunt your new body by this summer! Thanks for the encouragement with the induction phase...I have read multiple articles and have seen a video about this "induction flu" which causes nausea and headaches...It is your body's reaction to not having the "sugars" and "carbs" it is used to...much like a drug addiction and those are its withdrawal symptoms...I have also read that drinking lots of water helps...In any case, please update me on your progress! We can do this together! If the mind can conceive it, the body can achieve it.

                    Re: Need of supporting friend!

I always worry when I see people posting goals by a certain date We have no way of knowing if your body will allow you to even reach your goal weight, let alone within such a time, so you could be setting yourself up for failure from the start if you are concentrating on a 'lose xx pounds by xx/xx/xxxx' goal that your body doesn't agree with .

What will happen if you don't get to that goal by that date? I see lots of people getting depressed and giving up if they dont 'meet' their goals and so feel that it would be better to set goals you can control by your own efforts.

Why not concentrate on doing your Atkins 'by the book' and so set a goal of something along the lines of:
Eating only from the allowed foods list for 2 weeks of induction
Drinking xx ounces of water every day
Exercising xx minutes for x days a week

Those 'goals' you can achieve by your own choices of action rather than hoping your body will comply with your hopes of losing on an arbitrary schedule.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
