  • Veggies From A Can?????

Hi Everyone, I am new to this whole thing. Very strange diet! All the foods I was told to stay away from, I can eat!!! I think it's gonna be a great experience. Anyway, I am getting ready to start induction tomorrow. Wanted to know if I can eat canned or frozen veggies instead of fresh. Broccoli, Asparagus or anything else. I have a very busy schedule and don't have the time to cook down vegetables. Thanks for any input.

welcome 2Moments -- you can use canned veggies but make sure you rinse the salted water off the veggies before you cook them. Also, add some sort of fat to them when you cook them -- I use bacon fat or butter when I cook green beans. It's better to use frozen or fresh, but canned can be used!!

Good luck on your adventure -- ask as many questions as you need to, we're all here to help each other. I hope you have the DANDR book, if not check Amazon for a low cost one. Join a few challenges to help get active and take the pounds off. This is a great place to be!!

You can eat vegetables raw too. Make them into a salad - or my favorite sautee them in a pan - it takes minutes (depending on which ones you using)
Pumpkin a good canned vegetable that we are allowed to eat. Good with some cream, cheese, cinnamon and sweetener microwaved.

And because I lived in the south for a couple of years in my early married years and I learned to cook from my grandma....always keep a nice covered crock on the side of your stove with fresh bacon grease, "cause, honey, nothing taste as good as green beans fried in bacon grease", and a few other veggies .

I depend on my canned green beans. they are so handy, and I actually prefer them to frozen as i always find my frozen beans always seem to be freezer burned. If fresh is possible... do fresh... fresh is the best

BUT I can be super busy and after I pan fry a good fatty piece of steak, I toss in a teaspoon of minced garlic and toss in the drained canned beans. and toss some more olove oil on them... then saute them super fast. This is the perfect meal a busy schedule... Oh I also grate a bit of fresh romano on the beans one they are plated... I swear it is as good as you would get in a fine restaraunt

( for those fellow canadians, Presidents Choice has a canned green bean which is reasonable priced and better than most other beans I have tried)

Frozen veggies are MUCH healthier than canned. There's much less sodium and since they are usually flash-frozen in the field they retain many more nutrients.

As far as time, you can steam broccoli in 10 minutes.

I use canned green beans, collards and turnip greens.

Since I can't measure them raw, I use Fitday (or a good carb counter) to keep track of the carbs.

when I first started I made up my menu the night before -- that way when I got up in the morning I knew exactly what I was having for each meal and snack if I needed one. It kept me on track until I could get use to this WOE (which was about a week)...good luck! You will do fine.

not sure where you are at - but at my walmart (here in indy) - they have smaller cans of some vegees (both the walmart brand and green giant). i normally get the small cans of spinach and green beans. i love my spinach with about a tsp or 2 of red wine vinegar (i also have 2 oz cups with lids I bought from sams club that i put the vinegar in to put in my lunch bag - can do the same with butter for the green beans!)
