  • Been going for 10 days and dropped out of Ketosis

    Hi Everyone

I got a lot of good advice from fellow Atkins followers last time I posted when i was stuggling. I started a new Induction period about ten days ago. After joining Fitday to log my food intake and followed others advice I lost 4 lbs within days 4 days. I did go on to Ketosis, but I've dropped out of Ketosis and I don't know why.

During weight loss my carbs were slightly over 20 per day. Now I am averaging 60 to 65% fat, 30 to 35% protein, 3 to 5% carbs. I tend to be a little bit low in the carbs this last 6 days averaging about 15 carbs per day. Is this low carb figure preventing me from dropping more weight? Could it be dropping me out of Ketosis? I have not eaten anything I shouldn't have. I have been rigidly strict, but a bit low in carbs.

I've been a more active also. During the lower carb period I have been swimming twice, a total of 1500 metres, but it isn't having any effect on weight loss.

Has anyone got any suggestions or ideas to get me back in Ketosis?

How are you judging being in ketosis or not?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

A few years ago during induction i dropped out of ketosis and couldnt fiqure what i was doing wrong.I was following the rules exactly. The problem i discovered was my test strips i was using to test. They had past their expirey date by months. When i went and bought new ones it was showing dark purple "ketosis".Just a thought to keep in mind if your using test strips.

If you are only going by the Ketostix to judge in or out of ketosis, then you are relying on a faulty tool. I lost 50 pounds in 90 days and almost never even showed a trace. In the next two months, I dropped another 25 pounds, but I still felt like I was failing when I couldn't turn the stix any color than negative tan. Then, I woke up to the logical conclusion that it was the evil stix that were a failure, not me. I threw them away.

You can't even go by loss of pounds on the scale. When the scale stays still, or even goes up, sometimes you are losing inches like crazy.

When I hit my first stall, I broke it by going off induction and eating more veggies on rung one. The week I ate a lot of extra veggies, I dropped four pounds and I lost steadily for several more months.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

If your exercising allot then you may not show possitive for keytones on the ketosticks. It doesn't mean that your not burning fat, just that there are no spilling of ketones due to them already being used for energy. Do you keep track of your body measurements? Muscle mass put on from exercise may mean that you've dropped inches but no wieght on the scales.

              Thanks everyone for replying

I'm using ketostix to determine if I am in ketosis. A week ago it turned a pink colour the third position on the colour chart and now it's neg. Stix are in date. My friend is doing Atkins along with me and stix show her purple, she hasn't taken any exercise so maybe my taking exercise is the reason for my stix not registering.

I measured for the first time about a week ago, so reckon it is too early to do so again. I am heartend by SunnySmile's history of weight loss. SunnySmile your post has spurred me on and I will stick with it. What an amazing weight loss.

I started at 296 pounds. I lost 102 pounds in 10 months, doing it by the book. It was my second try at Atkins and I was more determined the second time. I never let up even once, even when I was in the hospital for over a month. I made them give me Atkins food, and refused to eat their Jell-O with sugar and refused bad carbs.

Diverticulitis and doctors orders made me stop the first time after I had lost 60 pounds. Thing is, I felt worse on the high carb, low fiber diet I was eating. They had me living on white flour bread, white flour pasta with no red sauce, potatoes without the skin and applesauce. I was in misery all the time. As soon as I went back on Atkins, I got better. Turns out I am allergic to wheat!

Do bear in mind that ketones will also escape in your breath and sweat, not just urine. If you are exercising, you may be sweating them out.

Hey folks, not once have I ever used ketostix. You don't need them, ditch them.
Tip sto get back on track with induction...eat lots of chicken and turkey, lots of chilli powder and drink at least 5-6 pints of water a day, every day. AT LEAST 5-6 pints.

So Paisley is a real place and not just a fabric pattern? Learn something new every day!

Yup, town in Scotland. That's where the original Paisley pattern comes from.

Thanks for that info. I tried once before & also was discouraged when the stix failed to show much change. I'm nearing the end of my induction phase once again with a drop from 212 to 205 (and holding, at the moment). So, thats 7 pounds in about ten days.
