  • sorta OT: Zucchini...is that a fruit?...

ok - so it reallllly makes me sad as well as mad when things like this happen.

I was at walmart - the cashier COULDN'T have been 21...and i had some yellow squash and zucchini. First off she had to ask what the yellow one was - then she was like, "is this a cucumber"? (ok, that's understandable they look a LOT alike) and I said, "no, it's a zucchini" - her response "oh, is that a fruit?"

wow. just wow. i didn't know whether to laugh or feel pity. it just re-iterates everything we know about how teenagers / young adults DON'T eat right and c'mon - don't even know what vegetables are?

i mean, i already hate going grocery shopping and seeing allllll these people with carts FULL of junk - but it IS their decision and i know that - but seriously. wow.

There are often those new cashiers have problems with items I buy. Jicama confuses quite a few of them

Botanically speaking zucchini is a fruit as it is part of the plant genitalia. I think that is the strict botanic way of looking at things.

I once had a young cashier that didn't know what a cucumber was. After I had to help her find the number for every veggie so she could ring it up, she stated that she had never tasted ANY veggie and she never would. I asked if she had ever even eaten salad and she said no, her mother hated all veggies and so that was the way she was raised. I think that is child abuse!

Needless to say, I never saw her again at Food Lion. Kinda hard to be a cashier when you don't know what any of the items are that don't have a bar code.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

that right there was something that went through my mind too - even if you DON'T eat a certain type OF vegee - you should at least know your job (then again, it IS walmart, if you know what i mean - and i want to say, i can say that because i used to work there).

HA HA HA! You should see what happens when I buy Habanero peppers (super spicy, like 10x more than jalapenos). The cashiers always freak out...I always say, if you sell it, you should know what it is!!!

Most of the cashiers never recognize bok choy, napa cabbage, etc.

One rang it up as turnip greens the other day. Was a bit insulted when I made her ring it up correctly.

another couple things not to take through the registers are turnips and rutabaga. I find more people at Walmart can recognize those than at our major grocery stores here -- maybe that's because they were raised on them like I was.

I am impressed with cashiers know what I'm buying, as most don't know what half of the vegetables in my cart are called. They panic when I get something without a sticker on it.

What I hate are the dumb comments. "Oh, are you making something?" Yes, it's called breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a whole week.

I just go ahead and tell them all when I buy turnips. I always buy them at Food Lion where they are the cheapest and always the best. Not even any of the adults know what they are. Sad. I have to say "turnip root" because that's the way they are listed in the computer.

Taco Bell "type" of food is good breakfast food. I make an egg "wrap" and fill it with taco meat, melt some cheese on it, a dollop of salsa and sour cream and I've got me a delicioso breakfast. Works good with chicken fajita meat, too. Mmmmmm I know what I'm having for breakfast in the morning!

Re: sorta OT: Zucchini...is that a fruit?...

my niece started workin for a grocery store a couple years ago so before she started her first day I took her to the produce section and showed her the WHOLE department, not just the apples, banannas and green peppers. I know her mother never would have dreamed of buying or using any of the root vegetables. I showed her how to tell the difference between them, and i bought turnips, rutabaga, parsnips and we went hope and she tasted them (raw and cooked). She liked all of them and it helped when she was working to know the difference. Many people commented to her (and her manager) that she was one of the only cashiers who knew her veggies. She's in college now and she buys these root veggies and has introduced them to her college friends. I'm hoping she starts a root veggie revolution!! (Of course the price of these will go up to the point where we'll never be able to afford them....I remember when avacodes were .25 a piece....now I am excited to find them for .99)

I have let the cashiers overcharge me while I'm going through their line and gone to the manager (not customer service) and have my overcharged amount given back to me...I've told them they need to teach all cashiers the differences in the fruit and veg departments. I have had as many 20,30 and 40 somethings who don't know as well as teens. It's sad!

I have difficulty because sometimes a veggie goes by different names. Like once I bought a fennel bulb. The cashier knew it was a fennel bulb and was looking it up as fennel on the computer. But the computer thingy listed as an anise---which is correct too.

Some cashiers in my area try to guess what you're making: tomato sauce, eggplant, mozzarella cheese = eggplant parmesan, etc. So they make a guess.
