  • Atkins, pregnancy and diabetes?

Hi Guys I've already posted this question on the diabetic forum but thougth I'd put it here as well in case anyone else had something to add.

As some of you may know I've been on this woe for just over 2 months with great results. I also have 3 children, I was diagnosed with diabetes and PCOS while trying to concieve the 3rd child and ended up getting pregnant after one month on Metformin. I continued on metformin for 3 months and then went off it and continued the pregnancy with no other form of medication. At the end my blood sugars were not in control and the baby was born large (11lbs 6oz) but completely healthy and no hypo after birth.

O.K fast forward 5 years. My husband and I started trying to concieve a year ago. After 6 months without success I went to my OB/Gyn and was diagnosed with blocked fallopian tubes due to the c section I had with my 3rd. IVF was recommended as the only option to concieve. Anyway we put things on hold at the time and now that my diabetes is under control due to Atkins we plan to proceede with IVF.

My question is how safe is it to remain on Atkins while pregnant/ breastfeeding? I thought that I read some where that it is not advised. Why? Is it because of Keytosis? I really don't want to go on insulin and since Arkins has been the only way I can keep my bs down I don't want to go off it. Controlled BGL's are essential during pregnancy. Thoughts anyone?

The weight loss phases of Atkins are not safe to do during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but the Maintenance Phase is safe to do according to the book.
