I've been on Atkins for 2 months now and I love it! I've lost about 20 lbs and I can't wait to get more off. In any case, I've been completely cheat free the whole time, and I'm home for spring break and my mom said that we should go to the mall and get a cinnabun(or however you spell that....). It's one of my favorite things and I just decided that I could handle it. At least it was a pre-meditated cheat right?????
Anyway, I found it REALLY hard to actually start eating it. I've never had an issue like that on a diet before! I bought it and held off on eating it until after dinner and though I knew I wanted it, I had to force myself to eat it. I am happy I did...I had a horrible day of sobbing because of something else going on so it was nice to have something that I knew I wanted and knew I had the self-control not to have if I so chose.
So I guess I'm just posting because of course, I feel guilty. This diet is so good for me because there's no wiggle room in some cases. For example, with low calorie diets, I would always do the usual, "Well, just a little more won't kill me" and so on. With Atkins, I know I can't eat certain things and that's the end of it. Fortunately(and unfortunately in this rare case) the mental stigma I have for those illegal foods makes it VERY hard for me to cheat.
I have been at a stall for a week so of course, in the back of my mind I'm wondering if what some on here are saying about the cheating and losing weight thing is true. I do wonder if that might make me start losing again. (of course, I'm not COUNTING on this....just curious). In any case, I have absolutely no desire to eat anything else illegal and I'm pretty excited to get up in the morning and have a regular eating day tomorrow.

Sorry for such a long and pointless post...I just wanted some feedback...has anyone else cheated and been able to go back on alright?

    Re: Guilty

Some people will tell you cheating boosts metabolism, some people will tell you that's rubbish. I'm in the latter group. When you cheat, you will most probably kick yourself out of ketosis, so even assuming you won't go on a monstrous binge, you will still need 1-3 days of induction to switch back to lipolysis. This is not the correct way to follow Atkins.

However, you don't necessarily have to cheat on Atkins. This way of eating is not a lifetime Induction, but it has three other phases -- Ongoing Weight Loss, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance. In OWL you start adding foods back, so "cheating" with a few nuts, strawberries, etc. is not cheating at all. As you climb the "carbohydrate ladder", you find your CCLL and end up eating foods from all Rungs. Of course, you still won't be able to eat a cinnabon, but you will have more food options without the guilt of cheating.

You are not in a stall. A stall is defined as four consecutive weeks without any loss in weight or inches. So one week is not a stall, but just a normal pause. Did you check whether you are losing inches instead? Here is a sticky thread about fluctuations in one's weight loss rate:

has anyone else cheated and been able to go back on alright?
In my experience on ADBB, most (all?) people who try incorporating cheat days into Atkins end up spending days/weeks/months in Sugar Land.

      Re: Guilty

Well, I'm not even considering planning any more cheat days or anything like that. I mean, at least it wasn't a binge or anything.
I know a lot about OWL and the stages of it from reading the book and the boards here. I'm currently on extended induction so I assume it won't be hard to start over again tomorrow.

        Re: Guilty

I don't doubt that it works for some people. I know I have had a single cheat at times and been fine, but for me I know one cheat leads to a general loosening up on my self control which eventually does me in. In fact I bet that one cinnabun would send me flying over the edge of a four day carb spree.
I commend you for really thinking about the "cheat" and wish that I could feel the same way you do about eating a cinnabun (I have NO DOUBT it would taste wonderful and would not have to force myself). I would however, think about telling your mom that you are really trying to eat healthy and next time, buy you a belt or pair of earrings or something that you can enjoy again and again in your newer slimmer body.
Good for you for doing this at school. I know that university cafeterias are not the easiest place to stay on Atkins so you definitely have proven you're committed. Congratulations.

Well. At least you had some sort of self-control. .. we all have bad days, and fall off the wagon. The most important part is you know the error of your ways, and are back on track.. Good luck in the future.. and maybe you can look for "legal" foods that offer comfort in your dark times? That way when you are pre-meditating an attack(lol) the food can be *legal*.

I had three beers, a bit of naan bread and half a portion of onion bhajee as part of a birthday meal last Thursday. It has really set me back! I am still 2-3 pounds up. Was it worth it? NO! I am pleased in a way that I get the instant weight gain (5 pounds) as it puts me off doing it again!

You have done so well by losing 20 pounds - that is brilliant! I would put this cheat down as a one-off - if you notice you have gained a few pounds I am not sure you will think it was worth it.

The worst cheat is the one that you get away with. It sets you up to think in your mind that it won't hurt, since the first time didn't hurt you any.

So many people start with one cheat and soon find themselves out of ketosis and giving in to cravings more than doing Atkins. Those people usually drop out of sight for a few months and then we see them again when they come back and start over, with much more trouble starting or staying on Induction.

Maybe you should check out the Second Time Around Club (STAC) to see the problems that repeat-Atkinsers have staying on track the second, fifth and 100th time around. See the problems you are setting yourself up for before you step blindly into the cheating territory.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

                Re: Guilty

I'm seriously sorry! I know there will be consequences but i knew what i was doing and i made the desicion. I don't know how else to convey this. I certainly don't think I'm getting away with anything! And I am NOT going to go off atkins or do a"modified" version of atkins with cheating or anything. It said specifically in the book that this diet was good because it is easy to get back on if you slip. If anything I've learned I don't want to do it again because I couldn't sleep last night due to the sugar.

We are not condemning you for the choice you made. It was your choice to make and you made and you owned it. We are giving constructive advice and insight based on years of working this plan for ourselves and helping those new to the program. Or those back on the program and struggling. If at all possible, we would like to help others to be a success by conveying what has been proved to be the downfall of so many people. We would love to help every person become a success and help them achieve goal and good health.
