  • what are your fave reasons for being on atkins?

    Ok - for all of you who've ever done a low fat diet or any thing else - what are the things you LOVE about akins that you couldn't do on any other "diet"?

    I can not tell you how AWESOME it is to eat REAL butter. REAL mayo. AND real full fat blue cheese dressing again!!!

    I think that's gotta be one of my favorite aspects of doing atkins.

    I remember all those fat free dressings (NAAAAAAAAASTY) that i used to convince myself i loved because they were fat free...

    and when i finally had full fat mayo for the first time in YEARS i felt like i was in heaven! :P

    but yeah - among so many other reasons, those are some of my faves.

    I love that I can eat larger portions and still lose weight. I can eat a 12 ounce steak and broccoli with butter while my friend on WW eats her 3 oz. of chicken breast and a salad with light dressing. I have still lost more than she has and I re-started Atkins 3 weeks after she began WW. I love the fact that I am not starving all the time like I was on WW because I can eat things that keep me full and satisfied much longer.

      I love:

      Not being hungry
      Eating butter, olive oil, avocados, full fat mayo and other fats
      Not being bloated
      Losing inches fast (even when the scales don't cooperate!)
      Not having to have dry food like on low fat diets... yuck!

        not knowing it at the time, but losing weight due to [first low carbing] and then atkins, i was prepared for the health issues i was to encounter.

        i like being smaller, there's no doubt about that.

          So many reasons!

          - Increased energy
          - Reduced appetite/lack of desire to pick or snack
          - Fast(er) weight loss keeps me motivated
          - Never bloated anymore
          - Better control of my depression
          - SO much cheaper! For many reasons, but mainly because I don't spend money on cr*p like chips, chocolate bars, sodas etc when I'm out. Also because I'm cooking all of my own food from scratch instead of buying processed cr*p that is way overpriced.
          - Being able to customsize almost any meal to low-carb so I never feel...deprived.

          In my opinion, it far outweighs the bad breath, induction flu and critisism from people claiming I'm "clogging my arteries with fat". Because clearly I'm eating nothing but fried food 24/7

            Avocado! Cream! Butter! Cheese!

            It's all good but nothing beats a pair of size 10 jeans after practically exploding out of the size 16s ... that is better than money in the bank! ... okay, that's a lie; money is the bank is better than size 10 jeans ... but not by much!

              Stephbob - for anyone who tells you "clogging arteries with fat"...tell them my cholesterol went from 210 (non-atkins) to 192 ON atkins! :P

                My friend eats low fat typically. We are going to the gym together tonight. She said she needs to go to burn off the cookies she ate last night that she shouldn't have. I am going to burn off the fat from my tushie.

                    Wow there are so many reasons;

                    Real food - nothing with all those preservatives, creamy dressings, good cheeses, the recipes I have found here and on other LC sites...

                    No cravings - must be my favourite thing of all. I can now happily walk through the chocolate aisle without buying anything and I don't care.

                    Watching the cm's around my waist melt away - I was a nice 'apple' shape and now I have a waist..

                    No bloat - ever

                    Feeling well and I have more energy all the time.

                    I sleep better than I have in years - is that really one of the side effects of this plan?

                      1. Butter
                      2. Beef (I am a carnivore to the core!)
                      3. Heavy Cream
                      4. Cheese
                      5. FULL FAT EVERYTHING. Savoring the fat on my meat, knowing that it has totally replaced the fat on my hips.

                      Eating to satiety, not feeling stuffed.
                      The total absence of irritable bowel syndrom that had plagued me for years.
                      No more acid reflux.
                      Cholesterol ratios that have the low-fat purveyors scratching their heads.
                      Being a full-fledged marathon runner at age 53.

                      7 years maintaining and never ever feeling deprived.

                        1. Not having to weigh and measure every bite I put in my mouth.
                        2. Not having to eat almost all processed foods because they were easy to weigh and measure to make sure I didn't go over in calories or fat.
                        3. Not having acid reflux and not having to take 160 mg of Nexium a day to control the acid; and it still didn't.
                        4. Not having asthma (wheat/grain allergy) and no longer having to take those nasty asthma drugs and not having to be within a few feet of an inhaler at all times.
                        5. Eating steak, prime rib, the skin on poultry, butter, cream and mayo without guilt, and I don't have to weigh or measure anything.
                        6. Eating full-fat cheese, watching it melt into a gooey, yummy puddle, instead of trying to melt fat-free cheese, only to watch it start to look even more like the hunk of plastic that it is.
                        7. Having my nails grow long and strong instead of peeling, cracking and breaking.
                        8. My hair is the silkiest and shiniest in years, and my ultra-dry skin is smooth and moist without using near the moisturizers that I used to slather on every few minutes.
                        9. Never, ever having to be hungry. I had to starve to lose weight on low fat, low calorie.
                        10. Being rid of diverticulitis, irritable bowl and leaky gut syndrome.
                        People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

                          Mine are similar:

                          No bloat
                          No acid reflux
                          Lessens depressions
                          More energy
                          Lessens sinus problems
                          Don't feel weighed down and leaden all the time
                          No blood sugar drops to drain the energy right out of you

                          Easy to follow--I know what I can have. I don't have to count every morsel and determine where the "points" or "colors" or "calories" go on some system--I hated that. All I could think about all day was food because these diets are built that way!

                          I can have lobster with drawn butter and cheesecake with Splenda (eventually). What's not to like about that!

                              it's so funny - but after reading everyone's reason's here AS WELL AS knowing my own and having BEEN a Low-Fat dieter for I can't even tell you how long - I actually feel sorry for all those people out there who still believe that low-fat is the way to go (and aren't educated on the differences of low fat vs. low carb)...I mean specifically those people out there like I used to be - thinking that overly processed foods - because they're "easy" to "weigh and measure" are the right food choices instead of all these natural whole foods that taste AWESOME (go fat!) and yet make you skinny! :P

                              I totally agree with the weighing and measuring and counting points that everyone here has talked about as I am technically a lifetime member of weight watchers. And I am SOOOOOOOO happy I will NEVER count another "point" that goes into my mouth again! :P

                              the only measuring i do now is for recipes.

                              I honestly don't think you could PAY me to go back to low-fat dieting.
