  • Chia seeds

I bought some, now I don't remember what was said about them. I did a google search and just got sites pop up that was selling them, not much about benefits. Anyone use these.

Here is a link with some good info: Chia for Health - Dr. Weil

I learned something new today! I had only heard of Chia Pets before - didn't know that you could eat the seeds.

Thanks, Mitzi, for the link. I've read that you don't need to grind them up first like you need to do with flax seed. I ate a handfull after I got home today. Not bad.

        Re: Chia seeds

I've been eating these every day now for months. There extremely good for you (better than flax) do not need to be ground, blend into anything you cook or bake without changing the flavour and are not changed by cooking/temperature. They can thicken foods and fill you up as well. They're full of EFA's and fibre, and absorb more than 9x their weight in moisture. I can't say enough good stuff about them! They're also supposed to help with cholestoral issues.

They also are sold under the brand name 'Salba' but I've investigated and from what I have found, they are exactly the same as chia, just the white seeds only (chia are black and white mixed). I buy mine at the bulk store, they're $20 a lb but go on sale occaisionally, and they last a long time since the max you are supposed to use is 2tbns.

you can do a google search of Salba or Google chia and you can find alot of other info on it. It's amazing stuff..used by centuries by the Aztecs for energy!

Not sure if it would fall under the same category as flax. YOu only need tax 1 or 2 tbsns a day. doubtfully would be mentioned in DANDR as it's only become popular recently.

            Re: Chia seeds

I've tried these several times and I really want them to work for me because they're supposed to be so health, but for whatever reason, I get mad cravings after I have these. I start craving carbs like crazy, and they somehow make me feel like I'm starving.

              Re: Chia seeds

I have a recipe for Chia "Bubble" Tea in my blog and also buried somewhere in the Food Chat Forum.

Chia thickens liquids without the slimy-booger texture that flax has. I've made "tapioca" puddings with it by adding chia to diluted heavy cream, sweetener and flavoring.
