  • Change in tastebuds

One thing I loved about Atkins back in 2005-2007 was the huge change in my taste of food. Not only did things I once liked, but now realised I had to limit, taste awful after just a week or two, but I started to crave, and enjoy foods I'd never liked or never wanted to try!

I'm on day 6 of my restart right now, and I'm already feeling that change again. I'm normally a big ketchip addict - I can't eat anything without it. Even last time I did Atkins, I added it to everything (illegally, none the less) For some reason, I forgot to consider it this time, so I hadn't touched the stuff in a week. This morning, I thought I'd try a little with my breakfast, and it tasted foul! So sweet, it was like liquid sugar. To go from a ketcup addict to not being able to stand the stuff after 23 years is a huge thing.

Also, starting to love and crave foods I've not liked before - I've eaten cheese 3 nights this week (within my limits!) and I would eat it all day it I could! I'd never had a salad before Atkins (I kid you not!) and now I'm dreaming of restaurants I'm going to and what kind of salad I can order.

Just one of the many, many things I love about this WOL

There are some low carb ketchups out there!! Really good too used with caution, of course!! That is, unless you don't want to know that information...and if that's the case, then I just lied...there are NO alternatives and good for you for being turned off by a former addiction!!!

haha, I tried the 1 carb ketchup from Heinz while they sold it in the UK back in 2005 and it was alright. Getting hold of any now isn't impossible, but probably not worth the hassle.

You wouldn't believe just how much ketchup I consumed when not on Atkins. Those huge gallon botles that fit in the refrigerator door would last me one week each! Probably just need to be weaned off it altogether. I hope Heinz doesn't go bankrupt because of my decision! haha

          Re: Change in tastebuds

It's such a strange feeling to crave "diet" food--stuff that you actually can have. That never happened when I was low calorie/low fat. The few times I have eaten off plan over the last almost four years, I couldn't wait to get back to my Atkins foods. Even on holidays when I prepared special legal foods, I found myself glad when the holiday was over and I could go back to the basics.

When I think about all the years I wasted eating low fat and low calorie... sigh...

I'm like that with salty food. I never really craved it per se, but eating it now makes me want to gag. Yesterday I made little zucchini slices battered in crushed pork rinds and Parmesan, but I fried them in bacon grease instead of plain ole olive oil. They were SO salty, whereas before I probably wouldn't have even noticed. It was part of my allotted veggies so I managed to scarf down about 4 pieces but thats all I could do, I just ate the rest raw in a salad later on, and it was SO much better.

My tastes have changed too. I have often taken a bite of something I was cooking just to test it and it was awful! (I always spit them out afterwards). I used to love mac and cheese but the last time I tried a bite, I couldn't believe how bad it tasted.

It's amazing how we ever managed to become addicted to these to begin with! It just goes to show how badly sugar and flour distorted our tastes and mindset that kept us going back to these foods. It's a fact that after the first bite or two, we don't taste a food anymore and to think of all the overeating we did, and didn't even taste the food. It's amazing.

I am so with you on this. I find sweet things (Like ketchup) too sweet and salty things too harsh. And other food that I always thought of as bland are now curiously delicious. One of the few things I really miss is a plain, buttered, baked sweet potato--no marshmallow, no brown sugar or sweet stuff on it, just a pure unadulterated sweet potato.

I was lucky enough to go to Italy this fall and was amazed at how delicious and subtly flavored food was there. I find that I am now using a lighter hand with a lot of spices and flavorings because my tastebuds are more active and I can taste more, if I season less. Weird huh?

                  Re: Change in tastebuds

Ditto with my tastebuds! Before I started this WOE you couldn't have gotten me to eat zucchini - I tried it the first week and it was ok...but nothing great...but a couple weeks ago I thought I was cutting a cucumber (talking too much and not watching what I was doing) and I ate the slices before I sat down at the table....I LOVE the subtle flavor and the crunch - now I eat them about everyday!

My family had pancakes w/syrup and ham 2 nights ago -- the smell just about made me sick -- that was one of my favorite meals before! I had a couple scrambled eggs with hot sauce (something I NEVER ate before - I had ketsup) and some ham.

I have always been a meat eater...carnivore was my middle name....now I go for veggies first, once I figure out what my veggies are for the meal then I figure out the meat....funny how times have changed!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed this difference.
