  • Just curious???

    Hi!!
I am a "lurker" here! Have been on/off for several months now and am excited to start and make this work for me this time! This WILL work for me! I have done it all too, actually weighed 221lb after birth of my 3rd child and lost down to 135-140 in around 6 months but did it with phentermine! Got to the point where it litterally controlled my thoughts and really my life :-( And of course no more phentermine and the weight came back and then some (I am at 175 now) I am addicted to carbs so WW and frozen food diets just make me want more! Anyhoo tommorrow is my launch date and I am so excited to join you all! Awesome place

My question is: Did anyone here just carb binge the day before you started? I think that is what i am going to do today and then bid a fond farewell to processed YUCKY (but tasty) carbs!! Just wanted to know if anyone else did the same??

      Welcome!

I think you will appreciate the natural loss you will experience with Atkins. It's healthy and sustainable. Congratulations on your decision to start this new Way of Eating!

It might make induction go a wee bit easier if you don't binge on carbs the day before. But what is really important is that you don't binge AFTER you start!

      Good luck!

I wasn't eating horribly before I started this time, the things I considered "bad" weren't in hindsight THAT bad (a coke a week, sugar in my coffee, bread). So no I didn't go carb binging. I think its positive reinforcement of something you're trying to remove from your life. You make a big deal of saying goodbye to something thats bad for you and your positive memories of it are going to be on your mind every time you crave sugar.

When you have a major binge, your liver and muscles will be filled with glycogen, while any excess glycogen will be stored as fat. This means that it will take you longer to get into ketosis, because your body first has to use the stored glycogen. At the end of the induction, when you have to find your degree of metabolic resistance using the chart on page 158 of DANDR 2002, this "late start" will skew the results.

Anyway, I am pretty sure those carbs really don't give a damn about your farewell. If you are serious about following a healthy life style, why would you start it with a binge?

Edited to add: Oops, I didn't notice this was your first post. Welcome to the board!

            Re: Just curious???

Hi Mom2 -- I told myself I was going to binge the few days before I started, but looking back I really didn't eat anything I hadn' eaten before. It really won't make you feel any better by eating those things - just be careful and get on the right foot tomorrow when you start the program. You'll be surprised thatin a few days you'll forget about carbs and how they ruled your former life.

Welcome to a new life -- welcome to this wonderful site where so any people are so helpful to everyone. Read the rules and keep the DANDR book close and refer to it often. If you don't have the book - buy one (check amazon for very low cost books - mine with shipping was under $5.00 brand new).

If you have questions - ask them! 2 very important rules are 1) Drink AT LEAST 64oz of water each day and 2) Exercise is NOT an option - you must do some form of exercise. Under the Forums area above you will find the Challenge area -- there are a lot of exercise and non-exercise challenges to join. By joining these it gives you a place to be accountable to yourself and it helps you meet people here who will become part of your daily life. It's nice for me to sit in Missouri and know I have friends to talk to in North Carolina, California and even in England and other places who are going through the same thing I am everyday.

What I did to begin with was after dinner I would write down everything I was going to eat the next day and I didn't deviate from that list. I wasn't hungry so I didn't want to go grab things I wasn't suppose to have. If you are hungry eat - make sure you have plenty of high fat snacks (deviled eggs, chicken or turkey dipped in mayo, celery stuffed with cream cheese) to get through those times. Those "I'm hungry" bandits will go away in a few days. Give the plan more than a couple days -- make a promise to yourself to give it 14 days --- then get on the scale and enjoy what you've lost.

            Good luck on your journey!

              Re: Just curious???

I wouldn't binge the day before. It just makes things harder in the long run. However, there were a few things that I made a point of trying that I hadn't tasted before. My way of looking at it was that if I never tried it, then it would be too tempting after I started to go without having a taste. The things I tried were delicious but I have no desire to eat them again now that I am in total control. Its certainly not a choice I regret.

                Hi there

Good luck! I am sure you will do very well.

I wouldn't binge if I were you but don't hold back if you fancy something in particular.

                  Re: Just curious???

                  Hi, Mom

My bet is, that most people do carb-binge the day before starting.

Having said that, I will say that what Georgiana wrote is absolutely true... "When you have a major binge, your liver and muscles will be filled with glycogen, while any excess glycogen will be stored as fat. This means that it will take you longer to get into ketosis, because your body first has to use the stored glycogen."

So what's a person to do? Well, I have found that doing Atkins successfully has a LOT to do with where your head is at... meaning, it takes a lot of mental fortitude. You've been given some good opinions here, on both sides of the issue. Weigh your options carefully, and decide which one you think you can live with.

And no matter which way you go, take Sunny's words to heart: "It might make induction go a wee bit easier if you don't binge on carbs the day before. But what is really important is that you don't binge AFTER you start!"

                  Good luck!

                    Re: Just curious???

I didn't binge. I don't think I could binge My whole life before Atkins was about eating carbs constantly. I was completely out of control. Control is one of the best things I have learned here. I started low-carbing without having any ideas of what I was doing - till I found this page and then got the Atkins book. So congratulations on having set up a clear plan for yourself. That will help. Good luck.
